Saint Katharine of Siena School Grade 7 Summer Reading Program 2012 Dear Future Seventh Graders, With the closing of another great school year, it is time to think about vacations, relaxing and READING! Please find the following: summer reading list, the required book report format and this letter of instructions. Requirements for this summer as an official seventh grader are as follows. First, you are to read three books, two of which are to come from this list. This list has been compiled with the help of previous seventh graders who suggested their favorite books from past summers. It is a very comprehensive and renowned collection of literature, so hopefully you will not have any trouble finding them in your local libraries or bookstores. The third book is a choice of either The Rivalry by John Feinstein or Theodore Boone- Kid Lawyer by John Grisham. A book report is not required, but there will be testing in September on your particular novel selection, so read it in August. Take notes and look up any unfamiliar words as a reference for the test. Please note changes in the plot and the specific literary genre of the book. Who are the protagonists? Who are the antagonists? Hum, I wonder what that means? Look it up! As soon as you finish reading the other two choices from the list, fill out the book report forms immediately. By doing this right away, you are less likely to forget the details before returning the book to the library. Do the summary according to this exact format. First, you must write a good topic sentence to introduce the main idea of the book. Then you are to write a few sentences explaining the problem and the rising action in the plot. You do not have to mention supporting details, only the most important aspects of the story. When you have completed that, you will write about the climax and conclusion of the story. On the back of the form, you will find the section - personal reaction. You are to write your honest opinion and reaction to that particular book and give reasons to back up your opinions. At the bottom of each form, you are to sign your name and have your parents sign also. The two written reports are due Friday of the first week of school. These reports will count as your first reading grade in the first trimester. Do your best work and make sure you write out your answers on another paper before writing on the forms provided. Proofread your work, correct spelling and always write in pen or you may use your computer. Please do not read The Giver or My Brother Sam Is Dead. We will be reading these novels during the school year. Remember to bring a copy of your third choice to school in September. Have a wonderful and safe summer vacation! Sincerely, Mrs. Jacquelyn Sevag
