We have a calendar year that may be different from a fiscal year that is different from the school year all different ways in which time is measured and arranged. Today we begin yet another unique period of timeour liturgical year. The First Sunday of Advent begins our new year of grace in which we will recall the events of our salvation and new life in Jesus Christ. Advent a word that means "coming" celebrates the coming of God into our world and calls us to be open to God's presence. Advent weaves together different dimensions of God's coming. As we remember God's coming in the past when Christ was born, we look forward to the his final coming in glory in the future, while we live with the awareness that he constantly comes to us in the present. Past, present and future dimensions all shape the Advent season: the Lord's coming in history, mystery and majesty. We will have many different opportunities to open our minds and hearts to the Lord's coming. Our Sunday liturgies, in particular, expose us to many different characters from salvation history, as they lead us closer to Jesus, including Jeremiah, John the Baptist, Mary and Elizabeth. Their words and experiences help us understand how the Lord continues to work in our lives. We also begin today our Offertory Procession. This more formal presentation of the gifts of bread and wine together with the collection demonstrates the offering of our whole lives to God. We give ourselves to God in response to his coming in Christ. God's Spirit transforms not only the bread and wine at Mass but also our lives.
