HISTORY OF STU

Prior to the formation of STU, there were several teachers' associations The formation of Kuching Teachers' Association was registered on 21 June 1962 and the idea of forming the said association was changed to STU on 12th September 1964 Membership was from government-aided schools as teachers from government schools were not allowed to join any trade union at that time 29th March 1965 - Formation of STU 25th May 1966 - Registered by the Registrar of Trade Union (Reg No. 5) Started off with 600 members and 6 branches (Kuching, Kuching Rural, Bau, Simanggang, Serian, Sibu) With the formation of STU, teachers were able to negotiate from a position of unity and strength Membership is irrespective of race and creed STU is affiliated to international and national organizations

MILESTONES OF STU

Hosted 16th ASEAN Council of Teachers in 1994 Awarded Best Union in Malaysia in 2001 Succeeded in the pursue of EPF cases of teachers (paid out in 1997) Review of hardship allowance Purchased a house in Miri in 1996 Purchased the 2nd floor of a shoplot in Sibu in 1985 Purchased 3 units of shoplots at Jalan Song, Kuching in 2005 Purchased an office unit in Sarikei in 2006 Recognition of the Diploma service as terms for promotion in the Graduate service (3 years of diploma service equivalent to 1 year in the graduate service)

To promote the industrial, social and intellectual rights and interests of members To obtain and maintain a just and proper remuneration, security of employment, and reasonable conditions of work To promote and ensure harmonious industrial relations To promote the material, social and educational welfare of members To provide legal assistance to members in connection with their employment.
