STEWARDSHIP

I would like to thank the members of the Stewardship Committee for their work in developing the Stewardship Renewal program this year: Adrienne Worrell, Paul Svendsen, Carl Olofson, John Pankau, John Majovsky, Sue Gransee, Kathie Marino; and our Stewardship witness speakers Jerry Pisano and Donna Burke. I thank those who have mailed their commitment cards to the rectory or placed them in the offertory collection. If you have not done so already, I ask you to return your commitment card. There are extra cards available at the Faith Network Desk if you need one. Thank You again for all those who helped in our Stewardship Renewal and for your continued support of St. Walter Parish.

BACKGROUND ON THE GOSPEL

Today is the first Sunday of Advent, which is also the first Sunday of a new liturgical year for the Church. The Advent season includes the four Sundays that precede Christmas. It is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this season, we recall two central elements of our faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory and the incarnation of the Lord in the birth of Jesus. Key themes of the Advent season are watchful waiting, preparation, and justice. In this new liturgical year, the Gospel of Matthew will be the primary Gospel proclaimed (Lectionary Cycle A). In today's Gospel, we hear Jesus speak about the need for wakefulness, for watchful waiting, for the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew's Gospel is dated by most scholars after 70 A.D. Most believe that Matthew wrote for a primarily Jewish community, but one that was no longer centered on the Temple in Jerusalem. These were Jewish Christians trying to come to terms with their relationship to Judaism in a new situation: Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. There may have been Christians who believed that the events of the world around them gave evidence of the imminent return of the Lord in glory. The passage from Matthew we read today is rather straightforward. No one knows the precise time of the coming of the Lord in glory, so watchful waiting and vigilance are required. The passage speaks to the uselessness of looking for signs; there will be none. As a thief sneaks in during the night, so will the Lord's coming in glory be. The question for us as members of the Christian community, then, is how do we prepare for this? Today's passage speaks more about the manner of waiting, rather than the details of the preparation. Jesus compares the vigilance required of Christians to the vigilance of a homeowner who knows the plans of the thief. If one knows that the thief's action is imminent, one remains watchful. As Christians, we know that our Lord is coming even if we cannot know the precise timing. Jesus calls us to be watchful and vigilant, like the homeowner. If we become lax in our Christian living, we may be caught unprepared. If you are looking for reflections this Advent in spending quite with the Lord, pick up a copy of the Little Blue Book, found throughout the narthex. It has been carefully crafted to help you explore the depths of Scripture and deepen your relationship with Christ.

PRAYER FOR THE SELECTION OF A NEW BISHOP

As our diocese awaits the selection of a new Bishop, pray the following prayer each day as we seek God's guidance: Lord God, you are Eternal Shepherd and guide. In your mercy grant the Diocese of Joliet a Shepherd who will walk in your ways, and whose watchful care will bring us your blessing. In your love for us, give us the joy of receiving a Shepherd who will be an example of goodness to your people; and who will fill our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.

Remember to Thank God for All His Gifts

Advent invites us to do things to open our hearts more fully to the Lord. Be it setting aside extra time for prayer, doing works of charity or going to confession. These actions serve to make our hearts a welcoming home for Jesus, while also helping to ensure that we are prepared to stand before Jesus when our time comes. Being Good Stewards of the Kingdom of God prepares us, not only Christmas, but for the future coming of Christ at the end of time. Thank you for your generosity and enthusiasm in providing for the needs of many in our community. Many ornaments have already been carefully chosen, but there are still several gift ornament tags remaining. Many of these are for parents or adults with needy families. While we all delight in buying toys or dolls for the little ones, please be mindful that these parents and adults need our support, too. Requests for cash donations are used to purchase food gift certificates for perishable meat and dairy products to supplement food baskets. All checks should be made payable to St. Walter Parish. Gifts can be returned to church the weekends of December 4th and 5th and December 11th and 12th. Please, NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12TH. Many organizations pick up their gifts within a day or two of the deadline. If gifts are returned late, there is a chance that your gift may not reach the person for whom it is intended. Please attach your gift tag securely to your present.

This year your gift to the Catholic Education Foundation can provide financial assistance to families who are struggling to keep their children in Catholic schools, where religious instruction and excellent academics are the benchmark of our educational model. The Catholic Education Foundation accomplishes an important mission in our Diocese by providing financial assistance to students in our Catholic schools whose families cannot afford the cost of tuition. We are grateful for your consideration of a financial gift to the Education Foundation. Contact the Catholic Education Foundation at 815-834-4033 or visit our website at http://www.dioceseofjoliet.org/edfoundation to offer your support.
