Setting up a D-Link wireless router

The following instructions are provided to help you set up a router so that you can connect your TiVo DVR to a wireless network. This procedure, and the content of any of the screens shown, may change if the router installation software is updated. Refer to the manufacturer's web site for the most current information. Begin this process with your computer connected directly to your cable modem or DSL modem. The installer CD will prompt you when it is time to add the router hardware to the system. To set up the router: 1. Insert the installer CD in the drive. When the Welcome screen appears, click Install Router. 2. Select your language and whether or not you would like to install a trial of Network Magic. Network Magic is not needed to configure the router, or to connect your computers and TiVo to the network. When you are finished, click Next.

3. As instructed, remove the sticker from the router and click Next. The installer checks your current configuration. This may take several moments.

4. When the check is complete, click Next. 5. Disconnect the power cord from the cable modem and click Next.

6. Use a CAT5 Ethernet cable to connect the router and the computer and then click Next.

7. Connect power to the router. The router will search for a connection. Once the connection is established, the router will begin its configuration. This may take a few moments. When the button becomes available, click Next.

8. Connect the cable modem's CAT5 cable into the router's Internet port and then click Next.

9. Reconnect the cable modem's power supply, wait at least 30 seconds, and then click Next.

10. The router will configure itself on the network. When the button is available, click Next.

11. Enter a password for your router and click Next. This password will be used to log into the router if you ever need to change the router settings. 12. Enter a name for your Wireless Network and click Next. The network name, also known as the SSID, identifies your connection from other wireless networks in your area. You will have to know you're the name of your Wireless Network to connect wireless devices. IMPORTANT: You will choose this network name later, when you set up the TiVo DVR to connect to the network.

13. Choose your security setting and click Apply Changes. WPA/WPA2Personal (PSK) is the recommended security setting because it provides the highest level of security. · TiVo DVRs require software version 8.1 or later and must use a TiVo Wireless G adapter to connect to a wireless network that is secured by WPA2 security. If you purchased any other brand of wireless adapter, you must choose WEP security. The TiVo DVR can only connect to a WPA/WPA2enabled wireless network using a TiVo Wireless G adapter.

·

IMPORTANT: If you just purchased the DVR or received it as a replacement during an exchange, the DVR may need to complete Guided Setup and download a software update before it can connect to a wireless network that is protected by WPA security (for more information, see TiVo software version information). If this is the case, you can set up the router with no security temporarily, and then add security when the DVR receives the update. Instructions on how launch the router configuration program to change settings appear at the end of this procedure. 14. Choose your network security strength. Most secure (WPA) is the recommended security setting because it provides the highest level of security. · TiVo DVRs require software version 8.1 or later and must use a TiVo Wireless G adapter to connect to a wireless network that is secured by WPA2 security. If you purchased any other brand of wireless adapter, you must choose Secure (WEP). The TiVo DVR can only connect to a WPA/WPA2enabled wireless network using a TiVo Wireless G adapter

15. Enter a password and click Next. This password can be the same as the router password that you set in step 11 or you can create a new one. The wireless password prevents unauthorized use, because any device must send this password to log in before it can connect to your wireless network. IMPORTANT: You will need this password when you set up the TiVo DVR to connect to your network.

16. Confirm your settings and then click Next. The setup utility configures the router one last time. When the button becomes available, click Next. 17. When you see the Congratulation screen, click Finish. You are now ready to connect your TiVo DVR to the new network. For instructions, go to How to connect a TiVo DVR to your network.

Changing router settings

If you need to change the router settings (for example, if you want to add WPA encryption), open a browser window, and type the following into the Address bar: 192.168.0.1. You will be prompted for the router password that you entered in the previous procedure. To change the settings that apply to the TiVo DVR, select SETUP > Internet Connection Wizard and follow the prompts
