President's Invitation

Dear Colleague,

I'd like to invite you to attend our 16th annual SWADE conference in October. SWADE 2010 will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a chapter of the National Association for Developmental Education, SWADE brings together educators from Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming to provide a regional forum to advance the effectiveness of instruction, programs, and support services regarding developmental education. The opening reception and registration will begin on Wednesday, October 27, at 5:00 pm at the Hyatt Summerfield Suites (9685 South Monroe, Sandy, UT). This year's conference theme is "Mission Possible". It will offer a forum for us to explore developmental education and all its aspects including programs and services that commonly address academic preparedness, diagnostic assessment and placement, development of general and discipline-specific learning strategies, and affective barriers to learning. Thank you in advance to all who volunteered to present workshops. We will be installing Carla Kulinsky from Salt Lake Community College as our new president. We will also be selecting our conference site for SWADE 2011. I would like to invite all members to consider running for an office in SWADE. This year, we will elect a president-elect and secretary. The presidentelect serves one year, planning next year's conference then represents SWADE as its president for one year. The secretary is responsible for all meeting notes. You may nominate yourself or a colleague on the form enclosed in this packet. Remember that service to your professional organization ensures its continued success. Also at the business meeting, SWADE will recognize individuals for scholarly activity and outstanding contributions to developmental education. Please use the enclosed forms to nominate outstanding developmental educators who you think deserve these honors. I'm excited about visiting the Salt Lake valley and look forward to a great conference. See you soon, and don't forget to send in your nominations for awards and officers.

Sincerely,

Robin Ozz SWADE President

Breakout Sessions Twenty-four 60-minute workshops are planned over the two days. In addition, this year we will continue to have "best practices" sessions as an option for conference participants on Friday afternoon. Roundtable discussions on topics of interest to developmental educators will be held. This is an opportunity to share ideas, synthesize the conference experience, and network with your colleagues in a more informal setting.
