A new home! More health care access

On January 30, 2009, community volunteers moved SW Community Save the Date Health Center into its new home at 7754 Join us for an Open House SW Capitol Highway, a block from our former site in the Multnomah Center. Wednesday, March 18th SWCHC is now located in a 2000 sq. ft. 5:30 PM to 8 PM space on the corner of SW Capitol and 7754 SW Capitol Highway SW 34th. The large banner proclaiming "new home of SW Community Health Center - expanding health access to the uninsured" articulates the goal of our move. In our new space, SWCHC has been able to increase from 2 to 5 exam rooms and has the capacity to significantly expand health care access to low-income uninsured individuals over the coming months. Not only will we be able to provide care to more individuals but we'll also be expanding our programs. One of our first goals is to add designated chronic disease management evening clinics that address diabetes, hypertension and asthma - the most common chronic conditions seen at SWCHC. We are also planning health education programs and building upon community-wide health promotion activities like SW Walks, our monthly one, three and five mile walks that promote exercise and community-building. development of health education and health promotion activities, we are working in partnership with clinicians and community volunteers to support improved health and sense of wellbeing for our clients.

2008 Maybelle Clark Macdonald

Caring Circle Campaign

Through the generosity of the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund (MCM), SWCHC was invited to participate in its second matching fund campaign. The MCM Fund matched every new $500 SWCHC donation committed during the campaign period of October 15, 2008-December 31, 2008. It's rather daunting to solicit donations during an economic downturn when everyone is feeling the pinch, so we are very pleased to report that we received forty-six new memberships. We are most appreciative of both new and continuing MCM Caring Circle members for their generous support of SWCHC.

The Kindness of the Community

Ever since SWCHC opened, the community has partnered with us in many ways to help make health care access available to uninsured community members. This includes volunteers providing clinical care, board and committee service, intake, medical and clerical assistance, data entry, the provision of meals to clinic volunteers as well as the combined efforts of SW faith Volunteer Dan Stodola organizations who provide fundraising, measuring to hang pictures in the new clinic. advocacy and volunteer recruitment. During our recent move, the community came out again with people rolling up their sleeves, grabbing a paint brush or hand-truck and making the move possible. We'd like to single them out for a sincere thank you: Sayeed Akmal, Shyan Akmal, Curt Clay, Bob Cogan, Alberto Diez, Bob Emrich, Katie Gaetjens, Yusuf Godil, Cyndy Heisler, Sazzad Hossein, Mohammed Kabir, Rian Kabir, John Kowalczyk, Amir Lukmanji, Mahjabeen Lukmanji, Marilyn Read, John Sohl, Dan Stodola, Dina Thompson, Andrew Yoshihara, Nick Yoshihara, and Paul Yoshihara. Thank you all.

SW Walks On the Move!

This program brings together community members from all walks of life who get together for exercise and the opportunity to make new friends.

SW Walks is a monthly program, co-sponsored by SWCHC and the SWCHC Ecumenical Support Group, to promote exercise and community-building. On the second Sunday of each month community members meet at SWCHC at 2 PM and set off for either a one mile, three or five mile guided hike in SW Portland. The program brings together community members from all walks of life who get together for exercise and the opportunity to make new friends. The first walk occurred in October 2008 and community members have come together every month since with the exception of December when icy weather forced a cancellation. In general, the philosophy of SW Walks is "there is no bad weather just bad clothes." This is Oregon so we're ready to walk rain or shine. In the coming months there are two exciting SW Walks developments: The SWCHC Walkathon: On April 19, 2009, the SWCHC Ecumenical Support Group is sponsoring the SW Walks Walkathon, a fundraiser in support of SWCHC with one, three and five mile sponsored hikes. To learn more about the Walkathon, either to participate or sponsor a walker, please check our web site for information and materials or contact Samira Godil, SWCHC Executive Director, at 503-977-0733 or email: [email protected] SWNI Outreach Grant: SWCHC has been awarded a grant through the SW Neighbors Small Grants Program (Office of Neighborhood Programs) to provide outreach to under-represented minority populations inviting participation in the monthly exercise and community-building walks. We look forward to having many neighbors hiking together, enjoying the outdoors in a healthy activity, on the second Sunday of each month. Consider joining us!
