Coordinator's Corner...Mrs. Lisa LaBrake

It is with great pleasure that I am writing this column for the Alumni Newsletter as the new Coordinator. I understand that many of you knew Pat Mergenhagen, former Alumni Coordinator, and appreciated her efforts in establishing and maintaining the Association. I am honored to follow in her footsteps. If you are interested in my background or experience, I wrote a column in this newsletter regarding why I was chosen for this position. Since I took over officially last spring, I have learned so much from reunion planning to communicating with former students and even maintaining class records for the future. I plan on maintaining many ideas that were long-standing traditions from the Association, such as the Holiday Party (mark your calendars January 8 at the Scotch N Sirloin), scholarships, and the Alumni Newsletter. Yet, with the changing of the guard, comes some necessary changes in our membership payment structure, and some new ideas, such as a Distinguished Wall of Fame. As you can imagine, similar to any organization in today's society, we are struggling economically as an Association. Our treasury is low, and we are looking for ways to disseminate our newsletter and raise funds for upcoming scholarships. Therefore, the Alumni Board decided that our new membership payment structure would be based on a $25 yearly membership. Our Membership Chair, Don Feldmann, has restructured the payment form and has attached it to this newsletter. This year more than ever, please donate to the Alumni Association; as in past years, a $100 donation will be considered a Lifetime member and a $250 donation will still be considered a Golden Lifetime member. The $100 Sweet Home donor will receive their name on a plaque proudly on display in the Vergils Community Center and a free Distinguished Alumni alumni t-shirt, and the $250 donor will have a Wall of Fame scholarship placed in their name designated to a specific type of student, their name on the Vergils The Alumni Association is pleased to Center plaque and a free alumni t-shirt. We are also in the process of attempting to send our newsletter announce that it has established a electronically to some members, whereby our process way to recognize some of our alumni - a of donation would be through an online payment Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame. system. The Distinguished Wall of Fame is an honor that will be bestowed upon Sweet Home graduates next year. In mid-November a team of veteran / current teachers, administrators, School Board and Alumni Board members, and class reunion coordinators made decisions on the process of nomination, selection and celebration of achievements. Our neighbors at the Williamsville Education Foundation were extremely helpful. Our goal is to have our first celebration of Wall of Famers by the fall of 2010. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at (716) 250-1295 or [email protected] Thank you in advance for your support and I look forward to a productive and successful year! Lisa LaBrake Alumni who graduated prior to 2000 may be nominated and will be judged on their excellence in their chosen field, service to the community and contributions to humanity. Nomination forms will be available on the alumni website at by February 1, 2010 and we hope to celebrate our first class of Wall of Famers by the fall. The Alumni Association and its board are extremely proud to sponsor this endeavor and look forward to reading many nomination forms. For more information, please contact the Alumni Association at [email protected]

scholarships & patron ads.....

The Alumni Scholarship Fund is supported by annual memberships, Lifetime memberships and in-memoriam donations. Helping graduating seniors is one of the goals of the Alumni Association. Selections are based on school and community activities as well as academic achievement. Students of all grade point averages are considered. Each year, the Alumni Association gives a special scholarship to the son / daughter of a SH grad. This year, the scholarship was renamed by the Alumni Association Board. It is now the Pat Mergenhagen Scholarship for the Child of a Sweet Home Graduate. This scholarship was for $300. This year's recipient was Dan Kozlowski, son of Linda and Mark Kozlowski, class of 1977. Once again, Neal Gafter, class of 1974, generously donated $2000 designated for a girl interested in the fields of math or science. Andrea Finley fit this criteria and plans to go to Colgate where she will have a dual major of Biomedical Molecular Science and Communications. This is the largest gift to date that has been donated and given to one student. Another Alumni Scholarship was funded by a Golden Lifetime member, Robert Kinneberg, from the class of 1966. This scholarship was designated for a student to have a future in music or athletics. Hayden Deneesha received this scholarship of $250 and plans on attending Fredonia State for music education. A fourth Alumni Scholarship was given to a student who has a variety of talents and has an interest in helping others. Adrianna Ammerman received the $250 scholarship and plans on going to SUNY Brockport and majoring in Early Childhood Education. A new scholarship to our list is from the All 60's Reunion Committee. Gary Klenk, Sweet Home alumnus and committee member, presented this $250 scholarship to Margaret Wahl. The All 60's Reunion Committee plans on making this an annual event.

Class Ring Resurfaces After 20 Years; Sweet Home Alumni Finds It

In the summer of 2010, Marlene Winkler will be celebrating her 20th reunion with her classmates. This fall, Marlene was also reunited with something else her class ring. This summer a 1990 class ring with an inscription on the inside was found on Central Michigan University's campus. The alumnus who found the ring was Pat Haggerty, class of 2004. Pat works as a Group Ticket Sales Coordinator at Central Michigan. He phoned the Alumni Office to let us know that he was walking through the campus and noticed a ring on the ground. When he picked it up, he couldn't believe that it was from his alma mater, Sweet Home HS. The inscription on the inside stated that it belonged to Marlene Winkler. When Marlene was contacted, she said "I went to Central Michigan in 1990 after I graduated from Sweet Home and within a couple months, I lost my class ring. I was so bummed", said Marlene. "I cannot believe that the ring was found 20 years later!" Winkler, a high school math teacher at Grand Island, is now the proud owner of her class ring and plans on sending a letter to Pat Haggerty thanking him for his part in this phenomenal reunification. "The part that is really weird is that another Sweet Home alumni found the ring. It's a small world."

social events & spotlighting alumni .....

Class of 1999 Michelle (Julian) Barkley ran a 10 year reunion in late June at the Blu Martini. Around 75 people attended and had an excellent time! Most people stayed until 12:30am or later, according to Michelle. There is a buzz about a 15 year reunion! Class of 1989 Eric Belter organized another grand time for their 20 year reunion on July 24 and July 25, 2009. On July 24, the class had a casual dinner-dance at Banchetti by Rizzo's outdoor grove beginning at 6:30 pm. A DJ played 80's and current music for their enjoyment. A dinner including roast beef, pizza, chicken wings, pasta, meatballs and salad was included. On July 25 after a tour at the high school by our own Kristina (Giamichel) Pinkowski, they gathered at the Frog Hair Grille & Golf in Williamsville beginning at 7:30 pm. Finger foods / appetizers were provided. Similar to the 10 year reunion, there were rave reviews of Eric's planning and execution of both evenings! Class of 1979 Chip Mussen was in charge of another successful weekend this time it was a 30 year reunion! On Friday, August 7, the class took a tour of the school at 6:30pm and then had their gettogether at the Ship N Shore at 8:00 pm. Appetizers were included for the evening. On Saturday, August 8, the Cedars Banquet Facility was the meeting place for the class. It was catered by the Grapevine. A digital DJ spun the tunes for the evening and food stations were provided featuring finger foods and desserts. Another terrific event! Class 1974 Dawn Steiger Stoll was the organizer for the 35 year reunion. It was held at Brennan's in Clarence in mid September. This casual gathering included appetizers, a cash bar and lots of reminiscing! According to many sources, it was a huge success.

Update on Burchfield Print Donation to High School

The nine Burchfield poster reprints have been hung in various parts of the high school. These poster reprints were given to the high school after Louise Simon Schoene attended the All 60's Reunion. Plaques will be mounted in late November marking Schoene's donation, in honor of her husband Dr. Gary Schoene ('65) and his sister Dr. Karen Schoene ('67).

Meet Lisa LaBrake Aumni Coordinator

I am honored to have been selected to be the next Alumni Coordinator. I understand that I have big shoes to fill from Pat Mergenhagen, but I will do my best to continue to serve the Sweet Home alumni. I would like to introduce or reintroduce myself to you. I was hired in 1990 at Sweet Home as a teacher assistant in the Academic Achievement Center and Computer Writing Lab. For those of you that may remember me, my maiden name was Lisa Chiavacci. I worked in the lab and AAC for one year while I received my Masters degree for Reading, grades K-12. In 1991, I became the reading teacher and Computer Writing Lab Coordinator for the High School. I worked there from 1991-1997, assisting students with their homework, and going into all content area classes to teach reading strategies. Furthermore, I took on some extra-curricular assignments, including yearbook advisor, costume designer for musicals, and Junior Class Council Co-advisor. Besides working with students in various roles, I also was the Teacher Center Director for five years, providing staff development to our district and served on the school's Curriculum Council for eight years. I was honored with an award in 1997 as Teacher of the Year by my peers and students. In 1997, I started teaching in the English department,

taking on freshmen and senior classes. Then the administration requested that I teach at the eleventh grade level and senior level, teaching such classes as Mass Media Analysis, and Creative Writing. I became a mentor teacher to my new colleagues, provided workshops in technology and reading strategies to my colleagues, and added membership to local community groups dealing with education. In addition to my teaching career at Sweet Home, I am currently and have been an adjunct professor for both Canisius and University at Buffalo. I have taught undergraduate and graduate classes in technology, education and literacy. Even though it may seem that my life is teaching, I do have a family who is extremely supportive. My husband, Matthew, and I have been married for 15 years, and we have two beautiful children, Alicia who will be 5 in December and Joseph who is 2 years old. I am also fortunate to have a "family" in our HS English Department and in other departments (retired and currently working!) who also have helped me achieve my goals along the way. With my continued dedication to education and more specifically, Sweet Home, I feel as if I am the perfect fit for Alumni Coordinator. Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. I wlll do my best to serve the Alumni Association and work with the Alumni Board to continue to meet your needs.
