Ipomoea

GARDEN PERFORMANCE

USDA Hardiness Zone: Not hardy AHS Heat Zones: 4 11

ROOTING UNROOTED CUTTINGS

*See General Rooting Requirements for Syngenta vegetative cuttings. Rooting Time: 4 weeks. Sidekick Ipomoea is normally easy to root. Rooting hormones should not be needed. Misting: Sidekicks can come off of mist relatively quickly. Ipomoeas don't require a lot of mist in propagation. Many times you will see them direct stuck and rooted into their final container. Pinching: No.

Garden Height Sidekick 12 14" (30 36 cm)

Garden Width 20 24" (50 60 cm)

FINISHING ROOTED CUTTINGS

Greenhouse Use: Excellent in 4" pots, quart, 6" pots and baskets. Sidekick Ipomoeas were bred to have a compact, well-branched growth habit. They make great additions to combo containers without over-growing the other plants in the container. Outside they are superb for ground beds, containers, window boxes and combination plantings. They have exceptional heat tolerance and do well in both full sun and partial shade. Transplanting: Transplant directly into the finished container. Place the rooting media slightly below the level of media in the container. Make sure that the root ball is covered and that the cutting is situated in the center of the pot. Moisture: Media should be allowed to dry between irrigations. Ipomoeas can sometimes get edema (small bumps typically on the undersides of the leaves) under low light and very high humidity. However, we have not seen any major edema issues at this point with the Sidekicks. Fertilizer: 200 ppm nitrogen. Sidekicks are moderate feeders. Monitor EC levels and leach with clear water as needed to avoid fertilizer salt buildup. They grow best when using a mix of (or alternating with) Cal-Mag (i.e. 15-5-15, 14-4-14, etc.) and ammonium-containing (i.e. 20-10-20, 15-15-15, etc.) fertilizers. Light: 4,000 7,000 foot candles. Sidekicks grow best under high light conditions. Supplemental lighting can be used in northern climates under dark, cloudy conditions to help push growth. Growing under too low of light can reduce leaf coloration, especially on Sidekick Lime. Media pH: 5.8 6.2. Media EC: 1.8 2.2 mS/cm (in an SME, saturated media extract). Temperature: 70° 75°F (21° 24°C) day and 65° 70°F (18° 21°C) night. Maintain warm temperatures throughout production to promote vegetative growth. Cool temperatures are tolerated, but will slow down growth. Pinching: No. Sidekicks were bred for branching and short internodes. Pinching is normally not required. Growth Regulators: Generally not needed. Sidekicks usually don't need any PGR. Black Heart is slightly more vigorous than Black or Lime, but still maintains a well-branched, semi-trailing growth habit. Insects: Aphids, Whiteflies. Aphids have typically been the most recurrent pest in our own Syngenta in-house production. Scout plants regularly and control using appropriate chemical and biological products. Japanese Beetle can be a problem when placed outside in the landscape. Diseases: No significant disease problems.
