Preface

Student's English Kiswahili Lexicon Version 4.0 September 12, 2005 One of the things I have noticed about our students is that, although they may be able to identify vocabulary in subject use, terminology, etc., they have a hard time actually conversing. They can tell you how to multiply using logarithms, define biological and chemical processes, but few of them can tell you what they did over the weekend. Typically, they will give one-word answers to questions. This lexicon is intended for Tanzanian secondary school students. The curriculum for Tanzanian secondary schools is set in English. However, most students' command of spoken English, even in upper Forms, is weak. Students' comfort level in spoken English is quite low. Few students possess the wherewithal to purchase dictionaries. Some schools, which do have libraries, may possess a few copies of one of the common EnglishKiswahili dictionaries e.g. Kirkby, TUKI, e.g. Kondoa Girls'. However, copies are few, where they do exist, and students are largely unfamiliar with their use. The aim of this lexicon is to provide students with a device whereby they may look up the Kiswahili equivalents of about 3000 English words. With practice, they may become familiar with the method of looking up equivalents of words on a one-to-one With Thanks to

SESS/VSO KAMUSI basis. Over time, as they become knowledgeable about the equivalents, they may become more comfortable with English words. At that point they may branch out and be confident enough to learn to use the detailed dictionaries that do exist. I have chosen the vocabulary by consulting Peter Wilson's book "Simplified Swahili". Wilson presents a core vocabulary of about 3500 words, which he considers necessary for an English speaker to know and use in order to survive using Kiswahili. I used this logic in reverse in selecting about 3000 words, which when mastered, would permit students to survive in English. I have taken some of the words from Wilson's book, others from Joan Russell's "Teach Yourself Swahili", and added more that I have noticed in common use in everyday speech, and in the media. I used the TUKI dictionary to verify the correctness of the equivalents. I also consulted a number of English and Kiswahili teachers to verify usages.

3

My aim was to keep the number of entries to a minimum, but at the same time provide a "critical mass" of words, to permit one to acquire a cogent vocabulary. Research indicates that once such a critical vocabulary mass is attained, ease and familiarity, and therefore, proficiency, in another language mushroom in a self-sustaining, self-nurturing process of learning. Put simply, one learns more words because one knows more words, and because one knows more words, one can "learn" to know more.

Educational technology refers to this as a self-sustaining positive feedback loop. Buckminster Fuller used the analogy of flight to describe the process. Once speed is increased to the point where lift is attained over the wings, an aircraft can leave the ground. In learning, once the loop is engaged, the learning process "takes off", and "flight" is attained. In terms of a second language, once a critical vocabulary mass is learnt to the point of proficiency, a loop is engaged whereby one is able to learn more using that critical mass, and add to it in the process. In practice this would be seen and felt by the learner when they are functioning in the second language, and using it to acquire more vocabulary, which they can use to learn more. We recognize the phenomenon when we become aware that we are no longer translating, but using the other language as a device in itself. The point of this lexicon, therefore, is the provision and induction of the linguistic tool of that critical vocabulary mass. I would like to thank the following people who assisted me in the preparation of this document. Walimu Omari and Tagalile, Kondoa Girls Secondary, for help with the translations and spelling, Mrs. Karen Yunus, SESS Project, for her constant and unflagging encouragement from the beginning of this idea. Thanks also to Mr. F. Habili, Head Master of Kigwe Secondary, for his final corrections. I would also like to thank VSO-Tanzania, for supporting the project, our final, and most sincere thanks must go to Barclays With Thanks to
