FOREWORD - TAPPI LUBRICATION ENGINEER'S MANUAL

As the Pulp & Paper, lumber, plywood, and particle board industries continue to evolve toward more efficient, increased production; largely through preventive maintenance and upgrading of existing equipment; we continually observe the need for reference data that will provide the mill engineer with guidelines and case studies that promote lubrication systems best practices. This manual is intended to offer suggestions for arriving at the optimum level of best lubrication practices in the areas of lubricant selection, lubrication systems design, control, monitoring, and maintenance. We gratefully acknowledge the many contributions toward this effort by those who have authored and presented technical papers, and trust that there will continue to be an effort to make this manual more complete in scope through the coming years. We will welcome any inquiry regarding a specific application, or lubrication system problem, and will provide suggestions. We also encourage participation in the TAPPI Lubrication Systems Subcommittee.

BIOGRAPHY

Complied, edited, and partially written by Wade Parks of South East Automation in Atlanta, Georgia and Jerry Kahn of JK Consulting; and sponsored by the TAPPI Asset Management Committee and the Lubrication Systems Subcommittee.

WADE PARKS

Wade Parks has served on the TAPPI and Asset Management Committee member since 1985. Wade also has served on the Lubrication Systems Chairman since 1992, and a member since 1985. Mr. Parks was a former systems designer with Farval Lubrication Systems and Safematic, Inc.

JERRY KAHN

Jerry Kahn has served as the Technical Program Director for the TAPPI Asset Management Committee since 2001, and moderates the Bill Babbington Maintenance Roundtable at TAPPI Engineering Conferences. Jerry is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP), and holds BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University and a MBA from City University.
