Special Guest Lunch Speaker

Rear Admiral USPHS (Ret), Kenneth P. Moritsugu, MD, MPH, Former Surgeon General, United States Department of Health and Human Services

Rear Admiral Moritsugu, MD, MPH, has dedicated his entire career to improving the health of all Americans. A career officer in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, Admiral Moritsugu served as an Assistant Surgeon General beginning with Surgeon General C. Everett Koop in 1988. He was appointed Deputy Surgeon General in 1998 and on September 30, 2007 he retired as the acting United States Surgeon General. Seven years ago, during a routine health examination, he was diagnosed with LADA, latent autoimmune diabetes of adults, a less common form of type 1 diabetes that usually occurs in adults over the age of 35. "I should know everything there is to know about health", Moritsugu says, but living with diabetes has given him, "a firsthand appreciation for the efforts that everyone with diabetes faces every day." A third-generation Japanese American, Admiral Moritsugu was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He currently resides with his family in Washington, DC.
