Helen Keller was born on a farm in Alabama on June 27,1880. Helen lost her hearing and sight due to an illness. Helen's parents hired a teacher named Anne Sullivan. She taught Helen how to spell words with her hands. Helen learned to read and write in Braille, a system of raised dots that can be read with the fingertips. She also learned how to write words. Helen entered Radcliffe College. Sullivan sat beside her in class and spelled out everything that was said. Helen wrote her first book, The Story of My Life. She later wrote 13 more books. Helen made speeches all over the United States to get people to improve education for people who are blind and deaf. A movie was made about Helen's life. It won many awards.
