BULATS Writing Overview ­ Teacher's Notes

Description This activity familiarises students with the requirements of the BULATS Writing paper. It helps them to think about what they need to know and do for the paper. Time required: Materials required: Aims: 30 minutes Student's Worksheet to familiarise students with the requirements of the Writing paper to increase students' awareness of what they need to know and do in the writing test Procedure Introduce the lesson, saying students will learn about the BULATS writing paper. 1. Student's Worksheet Exercise 1. Tell students they are going to check some facts about the BULATS Writing paper. Tell them to look at the incomplete sentences in Exercise 3, and at the list of phrases. They should discuss and decide, in pairs, which phrases are necessary to complete the sentences. When they are ready, check their ideas with them: 1 The BULATS Writing test consists of two parts. 2 In the first part, you write a short email or message, using information you are given. 3 In the second part, you choose between two tasks. 4 For the report or letter, you are given instructions to follow. 5 You are assessed according to your accuracy of language, organisation of ideas and achievement of purpose. 6 The test lasts for 45 minutes. As you check the answers, make sure the students understand the information, and deal with any of their questions. 2. Student's Worksheet Exercise 2. Tell students that they are now going to think about useful ways to prepare for and approach the BULATS Writing paper. They should continue to work in the same pairs. Tell them to look at the sentences containing advice in Exercise 2, which include jumbled words. Tell them to discuss and decide how to re-arrange the words to form correct sentences of advice. When they are ready, check their ideas with them. As you check, discuss with the students why the advice is useful. Add ideas of your own, according to your knowledge of the students, their level and needs, and so on.

1 Learn about the appropriate formats for short messages, reports and letters. 2 Practise writing tasks within the exam time limits. 3 Improve your accuracy in vocabulary, grammar and spelling as much as you can. 4 Practise writing tasks with approximately the correct numbers of words in them. 5 Make sure you always include all the required information when you write. 6 Always think carefully about the intended reader of what you write. 7 Plan your tasks carefully before starting to write, so that you have a clear structure. 8 Read the instructions through very carefully indeed. 3. Conclusion: Ask students about what they have learnt. You could do a quick quiz, asking questions about the facts in Exercise 1 or the ideas in Exercise 2. Discuss how you and the students will set about improving their writing.
