FIFTH GRADE BOOK REPORT INSTRUCTIONS

Use this outline for your book reports. Reports must be written in cursive or carefully typed. If the report is hand written, it must be 4-5 pages and written in blue or black ink. If it is typed, it may not exceed 3 pages. It must be double-spaced and the font size should be 12. The original rough draft should be attached to the final copy. A clear topic sentence should begin each paragraph. Skip a line between each paragraph and leave a space between the title of the report and the background information. I. Book Report Title Page A. II. Background Information A. List this information: 1. Title of the book 2. Author 3. Publisher 4. Literary Style (family, adventure, mystery, fantasy, etc.) III. Paragrpah One: Main Character Description (5-8 sentences) A. Name of the main character B. Physical description (What does he/she look like?) C. Personality (what kind of person is he/she? Shy? Mean? Weird?, etc., explain) D. Behavior (How does he/she act in the story? What does he/she do in the story that tells you what kind of person he/she is? What does he/she like to do?)

IV. Paragraph Two: Setting (5 or more sentences) A. Descrip where and when the story takes place. Use calendar and seasonal time. For place, be specific on the country or state as well as region and the type of dwelling (house, apartment, school, etc.) V. Paragraphs Three to Five: Plot Description (5 or more sentences per paragraph). A. Paragaph Three should include information from the beginning (How does the story begin? What is the problem or conflict?). B. Paragraph Four should include information from the end of the story (How does the story end? Does the main character solve the problem or conflict? If so, how?). NOTE: The paragraphs summarize the plot but do not retell the entire story. VI. Paragraph Six: Opinion A. Did you like the book? Why? Support your opinion. Was the book exciting, funny, interesting, boring, etc.? B. Would you recommend the book? To whom, and why? C. Rate the book on a scale of 1 to 10. Ten is excellent. Describe your reasons for the rating. VII. Paragraph Seven: Theme A. What did your learn from the book? Lesson, moral, etc. Please identify and write about at least 3 themes. Writing the report: A. Always write a rough first draft. Follow the outline carefully. Be sure to include each part of every paragraph. Proofread your first draft. Check for accuracy, and for grammatical or spelling errors. B. Make a title page (see sample on page 1, above). C. Illustrate a book cover. Make this page the cover of your report (right in front of the title page). D. Collate the pages so they are in the proper order and put the report in a folder/report cover.
