After reading Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, students will focus on the essential question of: How can we prevent bullying? Students will research the topic of bullying and how it appears in the novel. Information will be presented through a PowerPoint slideshow, brochure, and Webquest.

The will transmit the information through a slide presentation and a brochure. ELA Standard 2: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression. Students will read the novel, respond to the topic of bullying, and express their views and knowledge through the two projects. ELA Standard 4: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for social interaction. Students will work cooperatively to accomplish the projects. NET Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students will produce original work as a means of group expression. NET Standard 2: Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Publisher, WebQuest. - Students will work independently and cooperatively.


1. Class will use the Freak the Mighty WebQuest in order to complete this unit. 2. Students will read Freak the Mighty and answer chapter review questions. 3. While reading chapters 1-10, class will fill out the characterization sheet titled Max vs. Kevin. 4. Class will brainstorm about why the characters are bullied, using handout Targets of Bullies. Max vs. Freak handout should be substantially filled in prior to this handout. 5. Class will site examples of bullying in the novel. They can use handout Bullying in Freak the Mighty throughout the reading. 6. Class will site examples of productive responses to bullying in the novel. They can use handout Max and Kevin do the Right Thing throughout the reading. 7. In pairs, students will complete a PowerPoint presentation on the topic of bullying and the novel. Groups are required to present the following information: - Definition of bullying (one slide) - List of characterization words for each character (one slide for Max, one slide for Kevin). - Four examples of bullying from the novel, with page numbers (one to two slides). - Four examples of how Max and Kevin deal with bullying (one to two slides). - At least five suggestions for dealing with bullying. These will be found through research on the Web (one slide). - appropriate organization and illustrations - Works Cited slide 8. In groups of three, students will prepare on a brochure on the topic of bullying. Students will put themselves in the mindset of Guidance Counselors and produce the publication as an informational guide. Students will do the substantial part of their research via the Internet. Groups are responsible for the following information: - An article on the definition of bullying. - An article/list on the effects of bullying. - An article/list on how to handle bullying. - A list of beneficial websites (at least 3) with a short description of why the site is worthy of visiting. - Illustration that is appropriate to a professional brochure. 9. Brochures will be presented in a "Jigssaw" fashion. Students will walk around to different tables and observe the different brochures. They will be responsible for filling out a response sheet (attached in Student Support).

Prerequisite Skills:

Students should be comfortable with Microsoft PowerPoint. Students will be using Microsoft Publisher. There is a template for the Publisher newsletter in the Student Support file.

Novel, handouts and chapter questions (attached in Teacher Support/Student Support) Computers/Lab with appropriate software Students will receive extended time, reformatting of work and/or tests, copy of class notes. Students will create a poster or Power Point presentation on the topic of Friendship and how it appears in the novel. They will address such questions as: what do good friends do for each other and what are examples of Max and Kevin acting as good friends. Students will be assessed according to the rubrics posted for the PowerPoint and Brochure projects. Students will also complete quizzes and an essay.
