TAG Sample Lesson Plan The Burial at Thebes

A version of Sophocles' Antigone by Seamus Heaney Audience: This sample lesson plan is designed for use by classroom teachers working with teenagers in secondary schools.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

Under what circumstances might you decide it is morally justifiable to break the law? Core Curriculum Standards: ELA Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Language Materials: Photograph of Greek Theatre mask. (page 7) Strips of paper printed with the character Antigone's name, and her line from the play: "I am who I am." (page 8) Session Objectives: During this session students will: Begin to enter the world of the play and encounter its major themes. Be introduced to the character of Antigone. Read and analyze text, reflect, draw conclusions, share opinions, make and defend their assertions. Overall Desired Learning Outcome(s):

After participating in a series of 3 workshops, of which this is the first, students will be able to: Make distinction between the concepts of morality and legality. Identify some of the major themes and characters of The Burial at Thebes. Place the text of the play in historical context.

SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES

WARM UP & CONNECT Activity #1: Words in Motion 1. Teacher gives each student a slip of paper printed with the line "I am who I am.", which is a line of dialogue spoken by the character of Antigone during the play The Burial At Thebes. 2. Teacher models reading the line aloud. 3. Teacher directs students to read their line aloud, a few times. 4. Teacher directs students to move continuously around the room; speaking their line aloud, and to each other. 5. Reflection: Students engage in a reflective conversation with each other and with the teacher about the nature and implications of the line. Modification: Students remain seated, practicing their line, and waiting for the teacher to call on them one at a time to read their line aloud.

TEACHER TALK Words in Motion You demand to be heard! But you don't get the right response. So you keep saying the same thing in different ways.You keep moving! You keep declaring.

TEACHER TALK Reflection What do you notice about the line? What kinds of language is this person speaking? Are there any patterns? Based on this line, what do you think the play might be about?

1. Students are invited to leave their seats and arrange themselves in a circle, facing inward, focusing on the teacher in the middle. 2. Teacher shows students a photo of Greek Theatre Mask (page 7), and explains that Greek actors used masks like this during performance. 3. Teacher models shaping their face into a version of the mask in the photo. 4. Teacher may extend modeling by saying something like "Happy" and transforming their face into a mask that matches that emotion. Teacher may say "Sad" and transform their face into a mask that matches that emotion. 5. Students are directed to watch and imitate the teacher transforming their face into a mask. 6. Teacher says "Now, on your own, pretend your face is a mask that you can change or transform." 7. Teacher asks students to turn around or pivot and face outward. 8. Teacher explains "Everyone is facing outward. Everyone is looking ahead of them, so no one is looking at another person." 9. Teacher explains "This is the game. I will name an emotion, in response, you transform your face into a mask that you feel matches or expresses that emotion." 10. Teacher names and explains three emotions "Grief. Disbelief or Incredulity. Determination or Strong Resolve." create and practice sound of Antigone. 11. In response, students practice transforming their faces into masks of these strong emotions. 12. Teacher repeats the directions, naming the same three emotions, but this time asking students to respond by making a corresponding sound. 13. Teacher instructs students to put the two elements together; making the sound and wearing the mask of one of the strong emotions, simultaneously. 14. Teacher asks students to practice saying the line "I am who I am", while wearing the mask. 15. Teacher asks students to turn into the circle wearing the mask of one of the strong emotions, and repeating the corresponding sound, over and over again. 16. Teacher repeats the instructions for Words in Motion; asking students to say the line "I am who I am.", while moving around the room. Impromptu, teacher may give on the spot direction to change the corresponding emotion, use the line, raise or lower tempo, and volume.

TEACHER TALK Impromptu Directions Try to walk with Determination! What's the sound of Determination? You refuse to give in. Now you need to speak, use the line, but whisper it! Dial it up!...Dial it down...

Individuals or small groups of students are asked to share their versions of Antigone. The teacher moderates and guides a reflective conversation. Students feedback according to an agreed upon protocol, offering one positive comment, one honest question, and one well-intentioned suggestion.

Activity # 4: Thought Tapping · Students are invited to arrange themselves around the room as Antigone in different poses and states. The teacher moves around the room, bringing individual performers to life by tapping them and tapping into their thoughts. "

TEACHER TALK Thought Tapping We hear the character's inner monologue.We hear their thoughts. If I tap you on the shoulder, your Antigone will come to life for a few seconds and we get to hear what you are thinking.
