INTRODUCTION

Welcome to this, the latest Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support course presented for the St John Ambulance at the Headquarters, in Lichfield Road, Stafford. It is taken from the sixth edition PHTLS manual and is co-ordinated by Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Instructors on behalf of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Thanks must be offered to our numerous Medical Colleagues, whose enthusiasm and commitment for ATLS training over many years has now been extended to the PHTLS training programme. Special mention must be made to Jeff May whose determination and commitment to PHTLS has enabled this course to take place thus commencing a new bond and working relationship with the PHTLS faculty. The programme will be very intensive and certainly time constrained. You are therefore asked to ensure punctuality, especially at the commencement of each day and for all the sessions, as delays will result in an extension of an already long working day. It is hoped that you will enjoy the course and will find the arrangements and facilities satisfactory. Either myself or a member of the course faculty will be available at all times should you have any difficulties or requirements. The standard of dress is working dress (non-uniform) to allow participation in skill stations from a functional point of view. Please do not hesitate to ask if you require assistance. On behalf of the Medical Director and Course Faculty, may I wish you well with your forthcoming training?

EXTRACT FROM THE PHTLS MANUAL

Our patients did not choose us, we chose them. We could have chosen another profession, but we did not. We have accepted the responsibility for patient care in some of the worst situations imaginable: When we are tired and cold, when it's wet and dark or even when we cannot predict which situations we shall encounter. We must either accept this responsibility or surrender it. We must give to our patients the best care possible- Not while we are day dreaming, not with faulty or unchecked equipment, not with inadequate supplies and most importantly, not with yesterday's knowledge. We cannot know what medical information is current and we cannot profess to be fully prepared to care for patients if we do not continue to update and take onboard new teachings each day. The PHTLS course provides a part of that knowledge to the working A&E staff but, more importantly, it ultimately benefits the person who needs our all - The Patient. At the end of each journey, we should feel that the patient had received nothing but the very best. ---------------------------------------------Thank you for attending this PHTLS Provider Course in your own time, this displays your belief and commitment to both your patients and PHTLS and as such you are to be highly commended, we hope that you have enjoyed the two days. Your Certificates will follow in about 4 / 6 weeks and will be passed on to you by the faculty.

HAVE A SAFE JOURNEY HOME Stuart Alves MBE Course Director

7th

December 2008 The administration and certification is sent from the Royal College of Surgeons, to Stuart Alves. These will be then forwarded onto you in due course. You patience is appreciated.
