New Nursing Program Helps Remedy Shortage

NEW HEALTH CARE DEGREES OFFERED AT NEIT

NEIT Offers Its First Master's Degree Program

New eNglaNd Tech will soon be offering its first Master of Science degree! This Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) is not only the first graduate degree for the college, but it is the only MSOT program in Rhode Island and the only program of its kind in New England. Classes will begin in March, 2010. MSOT'S Program Director, Nancy Dooley, Ph.D., along with Professor Carol Doehler, Department Chair of the college's Occupational Therapy Assistant Technology (OTA) program, as well as faculty and staff, has designed a unique program which will serve as a bridge for certified occupational therapy assistants to acquire the necessary skills for the next level of responsibility as registered occupational therapists (OTR). New England Tech's MSOT program is unlike other programs because students will be allowed to earn their Bachelor of Science degree credits while earning credits towards their Master of Science degree. The NEIT MSOT degree is a "bridge program" connecting graduates from accredited OTA programs to the new MSOT program. In other MSOT programs, students must first earn their Bachelor of Science degree and then reapply to a Master's level program which may take longer to complete. The MSOT program will be offered in a weekend format requiring students to be on campus five weekends in each ten week academic quarter. Each quarter will offer an online course as well. Those students following the MSOT program as outlined will comNancy Dooley, PhD., MSOT Program Director, instructs OTA plete their Master's degree in student on doing kitchen chores while utilizing a walker. ten academic quarters. After completion of all classroom training and several levels of fieldwork, students will be eligible to take the National Certification Examination for Occupational Therapist Registered. Dr. Dooley states, "We are thrilled to be able to offer this program at New England Tech in a format which accommodates working certified occupational therapy assistants. We are filling a need for certified occupational therapy assistants to maintain their jobs while earning their Master's degree in a timely Nancy Dooley explains the use of a sock aid to OTA student. and efficient manner." As an OTR, graduates may work in a wide variety of settings in the areas of physical disabilities, pediatrics, geriatrics, mental health and wellness programs assisting people of all ages with varying abilities or handicaps to become independent in their daily activities. OTR's often supervise OTA's and other personnel, establish appropriate intervention plans for patients and act as part of a rehabilitation team to assure that the occupational therapy treatment plan meets the legal, ethical and fiscal requirements of medical and community-based facilities. Dr. Thomas F. Wylie, NEIT's Provost and Senior Vice President, states, "This is a milestone event for New England Tech as we begin to enroll students in our first graduate program. By offering the first Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy in Rhode Island, area OTA'S will not have to travel great distances to accomplish their academic goals as they have done in the past."

WINTER 2010

NeIT Is proud To offer our new Associate in Science Degree in Nursing beginning this March. This program, which was recently approved by the Rhode Island Department of Health Board of Nursing, is the first nursing program in the state in almost 40 years! Nursing is the largest healthcare occupation in the U.S., and the State of Rhode Island faces a projected shortage of over 6,500 registered nurses by the year 2020. This shortage is a result of impending retirements of experienced nurses and nurse educators, and future health care reforms, which are expected to increase the demand for nursing professionals on all levels. The shortage is complicated further by the overcapacity of R.I.'s current nursing programs, forcing students to wait several semesters before entering the program, pursue their education in other states or alter their career choice. As Dr. Thomas F. Wylie, Provost and Senior Vice President at NEIT, stated, "We are answering the call by the Rhode Island health community to assist with the state's nursing shortage and the lack of readily available classes for students to complete their nursing degrees in a timely fashion. Our program is designed for those students who are just beginning their educational journey to become registered nurses and for those who just need to complete their nursing course requirements." Nursing Program Developer, Karen Haidemenos, MS, RN, expertly designed the only nursing program in Rhode Island which offers a Karen Haidemenos, MS, RN, Nursing Program Developer, two track option. The seveninstructs students. quarter, 21-month Associate in Science degree program is designed for the traditional student who requires liberal arts courses as well as nursing courses. A fivequarter, 15-month Fast Track program will accommodate those students who have completed all of their liberal arts prerequisite courses but need only nursing courses to complete their Associate's degree. Both programs will begin each spring and fall starting in March, 2010. Both nursing programs include classroom studies, instruction in our Nursing Skills LaboraStudents practice bed to wheelchair skills. tory and Nursing Simulation Laboratory, as well as supervised, hands-on clinical experience in hospitals and other health care facilities. Upon graduation from NEIT with an Associate in Science degree in Nursing and successful completion of the NCLEX-RN exam, individuals will be recognized as registered nurses. Graduates of the NEIT Nursing Program will enter the fastest growing employment sector in the United States and will be prepared to work in a variety of settings including hospitals, home health care, long-term care, clinics, public health and outpatient care. Graduates are also prepared for articulation into a baccalaureate nursing program if they desire to further their education. NEIT is proud to be a part of the solution to help educate the registered nurses of tomorrow while helping to stabilize the nursing shortage Rhode Island is facing today.

NEW ENGLAND INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

NeIT was receNTly awarded a $200,000 grant from The Champlin Foundations, a 75 year old philanthropic organization with interests in education, hospitals, healthcare, conservation, social services and many others. The grant will be used to equip two state-of-the-art nursing laboratories as part of our new nursing program. Hands-on, clinical laboratory experience is an integral part of New England Tech's registered nurse training program which will be conducted not only in hospitals and various health care facilities but also through an on-campus Nursing Skills Laboratory and Nursing Simulation Laboratory. The Nursing Skills Lab will afford students the opportunity to practice new procedures, refine skills and build confidence. Equipment will include body parts simulation units, such as multivenous training arms, intravenous pumps, blood pressure and other vital signs monitors. All of these procedures will be practiced in this controlled environment before students work with patients in actual health care settings. In the Nursing Simulation Laboratory, students will practice patient scenarios with life-like talking mannequins computer programmed to simulate real-life medical situations. Students will work through acute episodes which they may not have had the opportunity to practice during their clinical experience. Such procedures will include emergency training with CPR, cardiac arrest and anaphylactic shock patients. Reviewing circulatory skills, engaging intravenous pumps, changing dressings and inserting various types of tubes will also be practiced. The mannequins are among the most technologically advanced training devices in today's clinical training laboratories. Dr. Thomas F. Wylie, Provost and Senior Vice President at NEIT states, "Simulation training truly enhances the student's clinical experience. We are very grateful to The Champlin Foundations for their generosity affording us the opportunity to provide our students with hands-on training using state-of- the-art equipment to learn essential nursing skills while ensuring patient safety."

NEIT Grad Serves Our Military

MIssy M. aNdersoN COTA/L, a 2008 graduate from NEIT's Occupational Therapy Assistant Technology (OTA) program, now lives in Kansas where she is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant/ Licensed with the U.S. Army. As Missy states, "I didn't think I'd ever go to Kansas, but here I am helping soldiers get back to their normal lives and loving every minute of it." Missy credits her success to her training at New England Tech and shares her story. What made you decide to attend NEIT? I called about four schools that day, and NEIT was the only one that answered the phone! How did you choose your program? I wanted to go to school for Physical Therapy, but when I called NEIT and received information about the Occupational Therapy Assistant Technology program, I thought that was a better fit for me. Tell us about your position? I am a COTA/L with the U.S. Army in the Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) at Ft. Riley, Kansas, "Home of the BIG RED 1" (first infantry division). Here at the WTB Occupational Therapy Office, we are basically psych OTs. As you can guess, most of our guys have PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), depression, and anxiety among other diagnoses. We work on stress management, leisure exploration, time management, communication skills, life skills, and any other activities of daily living that may be affected by PTSD or being in the Army for years and all of a sudden being put back into civilian life. We are really excited about the programs that are getting off the ground. Work therapy is something that the Occupational Therapist/Registered (OTR) has been working on, and we are very excited to be finally placing people into this program. The Commander here wanted us to contact a martial art schools in the area to see if we can get a program started here. The OTR has designated me to do that since I have a blue belt in Kensho-Ryu. There are other programs and partnerships in the works plus we will be opening the first WTB complex in the nation this spring. Needless to say, it's a very exciting time here! What do you feel ultimately prepared you for your position? My life experiences, the training I have received at NEIT along with the knowledge shared by the OTA professors has readied me for this position. Do you have any advice for graduates who are just beginning their job search? My advice to the new grads, especially in this economy, is to keep trying. Don't give up, and don't be afraid to think outside of the box. What can current students do to better prepare themselves for jobs in this field? Prepare by being confident with the skills that you have, and never be afraid to learn new ones.

The New England Tech community extends its appreciation to the Compass Group (Chartwells, the management company of the Tech Diner) for its generous donation of $5000 to be used for future scholarships. The Compass Group has recognized NEIT's outstanding students for the past several years. NEIT President Richard Gouse (left) and Robert Theroux, Vice President of Finance and Business Administration (right), accept a check from Tom Piascik, Chartwells District Manager.

Warwick Police Department in the Criminal Justice Mock Courtroom.

Criminal Justice News

The college's new Criminal Justice Center on Access Road was the setting for the Command Staff Training Program conducted by the Warwick Police Department (WPD) held December, 2009. This intensive four-day program was to provide the department's newest lieutenants and captains with practical instruction presented by WPD administration, some of the state's leading law enforcement agencies and our own criminal justice faculty headed by Department Chair, Ray Angell. The Warwick Police Department was the first law enforcement agency to utilize NEIT's stateof-the-art criminal justice center and hopes to collaborate with neighboring police departments using NEIT as a future training site.

On January 5, 2010, the NEIT Criminal Justice Department hosted the monthly Rhode Island Detectives Association meeting which included individuals from many of the state's municipalities. Criminal Justice Adjunct Instructor, Stephen Quartino, provided a two hour training session entitled Ethics and the Law Enforcement Environment. The college also hosted its first semi-annual training session to active law enforcement officers from various federal, state, and local agencies with Stephen Quartino again presenting. NEIT is proud to partner with our local law enforcement agencies to provide assistance and training.

NEIT Partners With Electric Boat

New eNglaNd Tech is now offering an on-site degree program to multi-trade apprentices at General Dynamics Electric Boat, Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, RI. The college was selected because of its experience in designing and delivering customized, results-oriented training programs and its ability to offer educational programs to people who are working full time. "This is an excellent opportunity for Electric Boat, its current multi-trade apprentices and future apprentices," says Courtney Murphy, Chief of Human Resources at Electric Boat Quonset Point. "It will allow them to work towards a degree right at the workplace." The curriculum is closely aligned with Electric Boat's business practices. New England Tech's mission is to provide a hands-on, technical career education which results in a degree. Upon completion of Electric Boat's multi-trade apprentice program and 13 NEIT courses, the students will receive an Associate in Science degree in Applied Technical Studies. "We are extremely excited to begin this relationship with Electric Boat," stated Steven H. Kitchin, Vice President for Corporate Education and Training at New England Tech. "We provide our students with the skills to succeed in the workplace." Graduates of New England Institute of Technology or New England Technical Institute are automatically members of the NEIT Alumni Association. NeIT' s Architectural Building Engineering Technology (ABT) conducted its semi-annual architectural walking tour in New York City this past fall. The day long tour began on campus at 5:30 a.m. and included various modes of transportation throughout New York Citytrain, bus, subway and 11 miles of walking. Visited were Grand Central Station, The United Nations, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, The West Village, World Trade Center Site, Wall Street and Battery Park. The class will visit Boston this winter and New York again in the spring. This trip was a great opportunity for ABT students to see firsthand how their classroom education is applied in the architecture of these well renowned venues.
