REVELATION 22:7, 14

OPENING PRAYER

Let's bow our heads for a few moments of silent prayer. Then, I will open with public prayer. Father, we call on your Spirit to watch over the things we study in this lesson. Help us apply the truth in our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen.

REVIEW Vocabulary List

Those who die in the Lord: since all believers are "in Christ", all believers die "in the Lord". Two resurrections: the first resurrection is for all believers. The second resurrection is for all unbelievers. Four stages of the First Resurrection Stage A - Jesus Christ at His resurrection. Stage B - Church Age believers at the end of the Church Age. Stage C - Believers who die during the Tribulation: at the end of the Tribulation. Stage D- Millennial believers, at the end of the Millennium. Two separate destinations: the final destination of all believers is heaven. The final destination of all unbelievers is the Lake of Fire. Summary Blessings and beatitudes carry the same meaning. Both refer to gifts that provide inner peace, happiness and spiritual prosperity. (Review first five blessings.)

SPECIAL REVIEW OF FIRST FIVE BLESSINGS 1. BLESSING ONE

REVELATION 1:3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near.

SEVEN BLESSINGS

Blessings Six and Seven

REVELATION 22:7, 14

a. Blessing One applies to believers who have wisdom because

they love and have persistently studied Gods Word. b. A blessing is promised to those who simply read the book of REVELATION. Blessings are promised to those who study and those who teach the book of REVELATION, because they recognize God's Word as something of great value. And blessings are promised to those who apply what they learn to life. In other words, special blessings are promised to those, teacher and student alike, who love and value God's Word enough to study it, guard it, protect it and obey its mandates.

THE FIRST BLESSING IS FOR BELIEVERS ONLY

2. BLESSING TWO

REVELATION 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, "Write, ,,Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!" a. The phrase "from now on" tells us Blessing Two is directed to believers who die from the time of Johns writing until the end of the millennium. b. All believers die "in the Lord". Believers die "in the Lord" because they have trusted Him as Savior, but this is a special promise that believers cruelly murdered during the Tribulation can be happy and at peace even under those horrible circumstances. Why? Because they go to live with Christ in heaven and remain there in perfection forever.

THE SECOND BLESSING IS FOR BELIEVERS ONLY

3. BLESSING THREE

REVELATION 16:15 Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his garments, lest he walk about naked and men see his shame a. Blessing Three is promised to believers who apply the truth to their lives. b. It speaks of believers staying in fellowship with the Holy Spirit

and living in Gods plan for their lives. It applies to believers studying God's Word and using what they learn. A spiritually asleep believer is physically alive, but is neglecting his job as a believer. He is not studying God's Word: he is sleeping on duty. Alert believers are growing in grace and in knowledge of God. They are awake and alert.

BLESSING THREE APPLIES ONLY TO BELIEVERS

4. . BLESSING FOUR

REVELATION 19:9 And he said to me, "Write, ,,Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb" a. There is a sense in which blessing four is for the whole human race, because everyone in the human race is invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. c. However, the true blessing is for those who say ,,Yes to the invitation and actually attend the Marriage Supper. d. Unbelievers refuse the invitation. e. All believers (with the exception of some in the millennium) attend the marriage supper of the Lamb. Why will those attending the celebration be blessed and happy?

Because they are there, that's why!

BLESSING FOUR IS PROMISED TO BELIEVERS

5. BLESSING FIVE

REVELATION 20:6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection: over these the second death has no power... a. There are two resurrections: one is a blessing, one is not. 1) The first resurrection includes all believers who have ever lived throughout all of human history and it occurs in four stages. 2) The second resurrection is for all unbelievers. They are all resurrected at the same time-- at the end of the Millennium.

Be sure students clearly understand Blessing Five. The subject is addressed in the Vocabulary List. Take this opportunity to review the four stages of the First Resurrection, if necessary. Explain which groups are involved and at what time each stage takes place. Use the First Resurrection Chart. b. Two destinations exist: one is a blessing, one is not. 1) Heaven is the first destination. All believers go to heaven. Heaven is, without a doubt, a blessing. 2) The lake of fire is the other destination. All unbelievers are outfitted with indestructible resurrection bodies. They spend eternity in the lake of fire. Unbelievers go to the lake of fire with their sins paid for: they have an opportunity for the same grace blessing of salvation, but simply will not trust the One who offers it as a gift to all who will believe.

BLESSING FIVE IS PROMISED TO ALL BELIEVERS

6. MEMORY VERSES

Briefly review all memory verses from REVELATION, CHAPTER 1. This brings the review to a close. Study of the Sixth and Seventh Blessings follows.

I. SEVEN BLESSINGS III

A. BLESSING SIX

Blessing Six is introduced here. Display Blessing Six symbol.

REVELATION 22:7 And behold I am coming quickly ... Blessed is he who heeds the words of the prophecy of this book.

REVELATION is NOT a Mystery--TEACHER'S GUIDE

THE PAST

1. THE WORD "HEEDS"

The Greek word translated "heeds" means "to guard, to keep, to listen to and to follow". It refers to the activity of wise believers living in God's custom made plan for their lives. In REVELATION 1:3, happiness was promised to teacher and pupil who recognize truth as something of great value. God's Word stored in our souls remains with us longer than always.

2. ASSOCIATED BLESSINGS

a. Blessings one and six are closely related. Display Blessing One and Blessing Six symbols side by side. Both verses teach the importance of Bible study in the believer's life, but the emphasis is different. Blessing One stresses the importance of studying God's Word.

BLESSING ONE EMPHASIZES THE "GATHERING AND STORING ASPECT" OF BIBLE STUDY.

b. Blessing Six teaches the way to grow up as Gods child is to apply what is learned. c. Blessing Six reminds the believer of the importance of being spiritually alert and prepared for Christs return. That is important, because Jesus is coming back. Perhaps today! d. Even at the time of Johns writing, our Lords return was the next event on Gods calendar. Today the return of Jesus Christ is even closer. f. Blessing Six is a promise to wise believers who respond to Bible Truth and confidently look forward to future events with inner happiness and peace.

BLESSING SIX EMPHASIZES THE "APPLICATIONAL (HEEDING) ASPECT" OF GODS WORD AFTER BIBLE STUDY.

B. BLESSING SEVEN

Blessing Seven emphasizes still another aspect of the importance of Bible study in the believer's life Display the symbol for Blessing Seven.

REVELATION 22:14 Blessed are those who wash their robes that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter by the gates into the city. This is a good place to display the gates of the city and tree of life symbols.

1. HELPFUL TRANSLATIONS

a. Other translations of this verse begin with the words, "Blessed are those who follow the commandments ..." Ask if any students have different words in their Bibles.

"WASH THEIR ROBES" ... "FOLLOW THE COMMANDMENTS" THESE TWO PHRASES DO NOT SOUND AT ALL ALIKE.

b. There is a distinct difference in the two translations, but by checking carefully we find the advice is essentially the same. c. "Washing robes" is a symbol for "keeping clean". d. How does a human being wash his robes or keep himself clean and pure? He follows Gods commands. 1) God's first command is for people to have faith in Jesus Christ and become God's child. 2) The second command concerns God's children following His will and plan for their lives.

HOW DOES A BELIEVER "WASH HIS ROBES" ?

8

REVELATION is NOT a Mystery--TEACHER'S GUIDE

THE PAST

3) Believers who agree with God about their sins and obey I JOHN 1:9, by confessing them are "washing their robes." e."Wash your robes" means "confess your sins and allow God to keep you pure".

2.

2. IMPLIED FAITHFULNESS

a. Keeping garments clean, staying awake and confessing sins all imply faithfulness on the part of the believer. God desires all believers to be faithful, but not all believers are.

a.

b. Blessing Seven emphasizes regular confession of sin, which is an important part of being faithful.

3. EMPHASIZED BLESSING

a. Blessing Seven also speaks of awards to believers who fulfill Gods purpose. b. The phrase "that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city." is a reference to special blessings in heaven. Point to the tree of life and the gates of the New Jerusalem symbols already displayed. c. "Tree" same word as "cross".

The word used in REVELATION 22:14 for tree is the same Greek word used for cross: ZULON

ACTS 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross (ZULON). (See also, ACTS 10:39 and ACTS 16:24) GALATIANS 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law; having become a curse for us (in our place) for it is written, "Cursed is every one who hangs on a tree (XULON)." The definition of the Greek word "XULON" is "wood, tree, club, cross or stocks". d. Man blocked from tree of life in the garden.

SEVEN BLESSINGS

Blessings Six and Seven

REVELATION 22:7, 14

9

God stationed guards to keep fallen man from eating of the tree of life in the garden and living forever in a miserable state of sin (GENESIS 3:24). Christ's death on another tree (the cross) made it possible for man to have eternal life in a state of righteousness. e. Tree of life appears again. REVELATION 22:2-5 ...in the middle of its street, and on either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. f. Inside gates of heaven. Blessing Seven speaks of some who will enter through the gates into the city. Evidently, there are special privileges for those who "wash their robes" or, "obey the commandments" to keep themselves pure.

4. COMMANDING TRUTH

Symbols for all seven blessings could be displayed at this point. a. Concerning Bible study. 1) A logical conclusion from a study of the seven blessings or beatitudes in the book of REVELATION is that Bible study should be the number one priority in the life of any believer. 2) All Seven Blessings speak to believers. With one minor exception, unbelievers are never promised blessings. The exception is that Blessing Four is offered to all members of the human race and all are blessed by the presentation of the Good News that Jesus Christ died for sin. The penalty for sin has been paid (ROMANS 6:23) and the entire human race has the opportunity to trust Christ as Savior. Each person must make a choice. Some will say "No". Those who say "Yes" receive unsearchable blessings. b. For believers only. 1) All Seven Blessings are promised to believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Every human has an equal opportunity to become a believer. 2) Blessing One refers to believers who have a desire to understand

THE PAST

God's Word and store it in their souls. Blessing One speaks to believers who know Bible study brings blessing. 3) Blessings One, Three, Six and Seven are promised to believers fulfilling God's plan by applying God's Word to their lives. 4) Blessings Two, Four and Five speak of blessings all believers automatically receive. Every believer receives Blessing Two because all die "in Christ" and death is a blessing; Blessing Four because all believers attend the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and Blessing Five because all believers have a part in the First Resurrection. 5) Blessing Three speaks of advancing believers using what they learn from Bible study to make wise decisions in life. 6) Blessing Six refers to believers who obey the truth they learn. This kind of believer knows the importance of Bible study, is guarding what he learns and adding more knowledge. Blessing Six speaks of mature believers who stay in God's plan for their lives. 7) Blessing Seven refers to believers who stay in fellowship by acknowledging their sins when the Holy Spirit brings them to their attention. It describes believers who receive special awards because of their obedience to God's Word. A mature believer is God's child who is living according to God's plan. That status is possible in the life of a very young person. 8) There are blessings beyond the norm for believers who fulfill God's purpose and plan. The believer who makes the truth part of his or her soul will love God more each day and will be motivated to live a life glorifying to God. That believer is promised special blessings in eternity.

SEVEN BLESSINGS ARE PROMISED TO BELIEVERS. THE BLESSINGS ARE A "FULL AND COMPLETE" REPORT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF GOD'S WORD HAVING TOP PRIORITY IN THE LIFE OF GOD'S CHILD.

c. Many verses throughout the Bible stress the importance of Bible study in the life of Gods child. A few of those verses follow.

1) In DEUTERONOMY, Moses spoke of the importance of Spiritual food

for the soul. DEUTERONOMY 8:3 And He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He

might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord. 2) JOB considered knowledge of God's Word more necessary for his soul than food for his body. JOB 23:12 I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth (God's Word) more than my necessary food. 3) And Jesus spoke of the importance of His Word in Matthew. MATTHEW 4:4 But He (Jesus) answered and said, "It is written ,,Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." 4) God has given us His Word to study so that we might learn to know Him, grow to love Him more and benefit from living according to His plan DEUTERONOMY 29:29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law. 5) Of course, whether or not you, as an individual child of God, are successful in doing this depends on your own will or volition. As God's child, you should give God's Word first place in your life.

5. SONG: "When I Get To Heaven, Will I Have a Crown?"

Patterns for signs are in Teacher's Appendix.

6. CLASS ACTIVITY Complete Blessing Boxes. Place the seven symbols inside the decorated Blessing Box. Students may take finished Blessing Boxes home. CLOSING PRAYER Father, Thank You for the many blessings available to Your children because of Jesus Christ. It is in His name we pray, Amen.
