SilkCentral Test Manager 2010 Release Notes

Version 2010 July, 2010 These notes contain important information that might not appear in the Help. Read the notes in their entirety. For information about installation, deployment, and licensing issues, refer to the Test Manager Installation Help. Visit Customer Care for further assistance.

What's New in SilkCentral Test Manager 2010

SilkCentral Test Manager 2010 (Test Manager) introduces significant enhancements and changes.

Versioning

Test Manager now enables you to create, revert, and delete versions for manual test definitions as well as shared steps objects. You can also view version details and compare two different versions. You can also compare two different versions or revert your shared steps objects or manual tests to previous versions. When you copy or baseline a project, you can take over the version history of the project's test plan as well.

Baselining Projects

Test Manager now provides a straightforward solution to create project baselines in the projects area of administration. For more information, refer to the SilkCentral Administration Module Help. Creating baselines for auditing purposes eases maintenance of sources and requirements that are integrated from external systems. During the creation of a baseline you can specify whether you want to maintain or to detach calls to library steps. Once you have created a baseline, it is displayed as a child node of the source project in the project area of Test Manager. In the project area, you can also use the Baseline Test Comparison report to compare the contents and results of the same test plan elements in different baselines. The history of a test plan element in a baseline contains a reference to the respective element in the source project.

Shared Steps Libraries

Test Manager now enables you to reuse manual test steps in multiple test definitions across multiple projects. This new feature reduces the maintenance effort for manual tests that have a set of common steps but are included in different projects, folders, or containers. Users with the role SuperUser or Test Manager can create, view, edit, and delete shared steps objects in the new Libraries unit. Users with the role Tester can also create, view, and edit shared steps objects. All changes to the steps in the shared steps object are applied to all test definitions that reuse the steps. The Libraries unit includes the Libraries tree, which is organized by libraries, folders, and shared step objects. The Usages page of each shared step object in the tree lists test definitions and other shared step objects that are calling the selected object, allowing you to estimate the impact of a change to the object. You can search the Libraries tree for existing shared steps objects, and you can also create shared steps objects directly from the Steps page of a manual test definition in the Test Plan unit.

Flags

Test Manager now enables you to manually or automatically flag requirements. Flags indicate to others that a requirement has changed or needs to be reviewed. Requirements with flags appear in the Requirements tree with notification icons on them. You can configure flagging on the Settings Notifications page.

Usability Enhancements

The following usability enhancements have been made throughout Test Manager. New Project Display Projects and project baselines are now ordered hierarchically in the Projects page. The new display supports filtering, but does not support sorting. Projects are sorted by their name. Project baselines are displayed as child nodes of the original project, marked with a special icon, and sorted by their date of creation. Inactive projects are not displayed unless they are required to show an active project in the hierarchy. Filtering Available Items to Assign You can now apply pre-defined filters to facilitate asset assignment. When you are assigning requirements to test definitions or assigning test definitions to requirements, the available items to assign can now be filtered by using a filter list above the available items tree view. Easier Assignment in the User Interface The assignment of one element to another in Test Manager has been enhanced. You are no longer required to click Apply, because Test Manager now immediately applies the assignment and removal of elements. Additionally, in the following pages you can now double-click an entry in the tree to assign it to the selected item: Page Requirements Assigned Test Definitions Test Plan Assigned Requirements Execution Assigned Test Definitions Permission Settings You can now administrate the permission settings for source control configuration, issue tracking configuration, project baselines, and shared step libraries in Administration Users Roles. Planned Time The planned time is now displayed for shared step objects in the Libraries unit and for manual test definitions in the Test Definition Details section in Execution Runs. The planned time is the sum of the times estimated for each step in the manual test definition or shared steps object. Reporting Enhancements

The enhanced reporting provides additional presentation-quality information for analysis. Baseline Test Comparison Report The new Baseline Test Comparison report displays the amount of test definitions that are created, changed, and deleted in the current project compared to a baseline. It also displays the status of all test definitions in the project and the baseline, in both tabular and graph form. ProjectID The ProjectID is moved from the table TM_TestContainers to the table TM_TestPlanNodes in the Test Manager database model. Update custom reports that use the ProjectID to the change.

Note: To improve performance, we recommend to install the database system separately as a standalone system. Alternately, you can configure MSDE/SQL Server to use only a fixed amount of memory and to minimize resource conflicts with other applications. To install Test Manager as an enterprise system, install the Test Manager servers on separate machines. These servers include the application server, Web server, chart server, execution server, and database system. This procedure is outlined in the Custom Installation section of the SilkCentral Test Manager 2010 Installation Help. You can also install any combination of these components on separate machines. For more information on the optimal configuration of Test Manager contact technical support. Execution Server Requirements The actual requirements and prerequisites for execution servers depend on the application under test (AUT) and the type of testing. For load testing, refer to the environment requirements of SilkPerformer. Running load tests with the minimal configuration can result in inaccurate results. For functional testing, refer to the environment requirements of SilkTest. We recommend a minimum of 1024 MB main memory for intensive testing, such as Web browser replay. Virtualization Test Manager is tested to run on a virtual infrastructure environment, for example VMware ESX server. For optimal performance we recommend using physical hardware.
