Introduction

Content of this issue:

Surface defects like craters, fish-eyes, orange peel, pinholes and benard cells can appear when the surface tension of a liquid paint is too high. In these situations additive are needed to reduce the surface tension. If an additional slip or surface smoothness is required of the final paint film, the chemistry of the additive will most likely be based on Polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS). Pure PDMS have limited use in coatings, due to their incompatibility with most paint systems. By variations in molecular weight and side chains it makes it possible to develop PDMS that are compatible with a wide variety of coatings systems. This has lead to the development of EFKA® 3288, an organically modified polysiloxane.

Application field

EFKA® 3288 is recommended for all kind of solvent-based high gloss coatings. Specially for clear coatings like wood finishes and automotive clearcoats where haze of the paint film is not allowed. EFKA® 3288 can also be used in water-based industrial coating systems.

Properties

EFKA® 3288 is a very effective additive, which increases slip, surface smoothness and "soft-touch" effect. Due to its excellent compatibility properties, it is very suitable for use in high gloss clear coatings without causing haze. EFKA® 3288: - improves levelling, surface smoothness - increases scratch and abrasion resistance - improves the orientation of metallic pigments and matting agents - prevents floating and flooding - enhances anti-blocking characteristics - has minimal effect on intercoat adhesion - has minimal effect on foam stabilisation - prevents cratering

Application tests on EFKA® 3288

EFKA® 3288 has been tested in solvent-based systems as well as in water-based systems in comparison to some other commercial available slip and levelling agents.

Results of the application test in solvent-based systems

Foam stabilisation properties as well as the coefficient of friction (cof) at different levels of EFKA® 3288 in solvent-based systems have been studied. This study has been carried out in comparison to some commercially available products in the market. The compatibility, foam stabilisation and cof in standard alkyd systems, long oil, medium oil and short oil as well as combinations with nitrocellulose and 2-pack polyurethanes are showing good performances. Major differences in foam stabilisation were observed in 2-pack epoxy systems.

® Application of EFKA 3288 in industrial water-based systems

Due to its chemical modifications EFKA® 3288 is soluble in water. A graph of the reduction of surface tension of water at different levels of additives is shown underneath. Two benchmark products are taken as a comparison to show the efficiency of EFKA® 3288. At dosage level 0.05% competitor product 2 starts to increase surface tension which indicates Micelle formation. This can eventually result in final paint defects.
