What is EFQM?

A Business Excellence Model used throughout Europe

The EFQM Excellence Model was introduced at the beginning of 1992 as the framework for assessing the achievement of Excellence within any business (large or small, public or private). It is the most widely used organisational framework across Europe and has become the basis for the majority of national and regional Excellence Awards. Whilst the Excellence Awards are a focus for some users, the true measure of the Excellence Model's effectiveness is its widespread use as a management system diagnostics tool which is used as part of their business planning process and as a basis for reviewing operational performance. As a result of continual review, the model has now been revised for 2010 and is being used by in excess of 20,000 organisations across Europe. The EFQM model is a practical tool to help organisations achieve excellence by measuring where they are on the path to achieving business excellence, helping to identify business strengths and areas for improvement. The EFQM Model encourages companies to examine the organisation's functions, leadership, operations, measures and results obtained as a whole and, using the EFQM RADAR scoring logic, models each individual criteria. RADAR can also be used as a tool to plan and assess future plans. The evaluation of processes and outputs in the EFQM Model is based on nine criteria - five of the criteria are defined as enablers and four as results. Enablers and results are equally important in the model. The EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) are committed to researching and updating the Model with the inputs of tested good practices from thousands of organisations both within and outside of Europe. Over the years a number of studies have investigated the correlation between the adoption of holistic models, such as the EFQM Excellence Model, and improved organisational results. The majority show a positive linkage and increased company performance of companies adopting the model against companies that fail to engage.
