DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS WITH TEGRAL FAÇADE SYSTEMS

COLOUR & FINISH OUR PRODUCTS... YOUR PALETTE... At Tegral, we have recognised that the use of colour is critical in building design, enhancing or reducing the appearance of volume and scale, blending in with the surrounding environment or making a statement about the role or status of the building. Our products offer an extensive choice of colours and finishes providing you, the designer, with a high degree of visual subtlety and flexibility. · The Natura range currently offers 42 standard colours with a smooth clean surface finish revealing the natural fibre cement grain. · The Textura range, with a lightly textured finish currently provides a choice of 15 standard vibrant colours plus the option of special colours subject to technical feasibility. · The Pictura range has 15 standard colours with an easy-clean finish allowing the designer to introduce both colour and durability for more aggressive environments. FIXING FLEXIBILITY Tegral provide more fixing options than any other supplier in the Irish market and our sheets can be cut to any format. Consider the clean, crisp lines of Tegral Tergo secret fix system, the huge range of design options in the Tegral Naxo decorative fixing system, or the choice of screw or rivet fixings with coloured heads. Consider also the weatherboard or shiplap options and combine all of these alternatives with the different colour finishes available through Tegral and the range of choice becomes almost limitless. QUALITY & DURABILITY All of our products have been tested using accelerated age testing techniques and provide a life expectancy of over 60 years. They come with a 10 year colour stability guarantee, are frost resistant and impermeable and therefore provide excellent weather resistance. They are resistant to insects, mould damage, impact damage and are non-combustible (EN 13501-1) and UV stable. They are approved for use by the BBA under Agreement Certificate No6/4346. EASY TO FIX Because they are easy to fix they can help the rapid construction of the building envelope thus allowing the introduction of the follow-on trades thereby reducing overall project timeline and helping to guarantee achievement of target completion date.

ENVIRONMENT Environmental Product Declaration to ISO 14025 is available.

APPLICATIONS

RAINSCREEN FACADE Rainscreen cladding is the attachment of an outer skin of cladding with a ventilated and drained cavity to a new or existing building. The system is a form of double wall construction that uses an outer layer to keep out the rain and an inner layer to provide thermal insulation, prevent excessive air leakage and carry wind loadings. The outer layer breaths like a skin while the inner layer reduces energy losses. The structural frame of the building is kept absolutely dry, as water never reaches it or the thermal insulation. Evaporation and drainage in the cavity removes water that penetrates between panel joints. Water droplets are not driven through the panel joints or openings because the rainscreen principle means that wind pressure acting on the outer face of the panel is equalised in the cavity. Therefore, there is no significant pressure differential to drive the rain through joints. During extreme weather, a minimal amount of water may penetrate the outer cladding. This, however, will run as droplets down the back of the cladding sheets and be dissipated through evaporation and drainage. ADVANTAGES By insulating the structural wall externally the following benefits are achieved: · Thermal bridging is eliminated because there are no interruptions caused by floor slabs. · Temperature fluctuations are minimised due to insulation on the outside. · Interstitial condensation is prevented as vapour pressure and wall temperature restricts condensation to the ventilated cavity. · Heat from the sun is dissipated so that the temperature is dispersed in the cavity and ventilated through openings.

8

APPLICATIONS

BALCONIES Textura Balcony Panels have the finish on both sides to create a quality appearance on both the external façade and the internal environment. Textura Balcony Panels will provide a durable and long lasting finish. SOFFITS Tegral façade panels can be used on soffits to provide an attractive, clean and durable finish. The soffits can be specified in the same colour as the façade or in a subtle shade to create contrast and interest. EXTERIOR / INTERIOR OVERCLADDING If a rainscreen system is not required, Tegral façade panels can be used as exterior overcladding to cost effectively and rapidly renovate and modernise a building. The Tegral panels can be applied directly onto timber battens or an aluminium subframe. WEATHERBOARDING / SHIPLAP Weatherboarding can lend optical depth and structure to a façade. Panel dimensions may be uniform or varied and a range of effects can be created. The traditional shiplap effect can be created through the use of narrower horizontally laid panels whilst larger panels can be used to emphasise the abstract character of the building. Weatherboarding can be mounted on an aluminium or treated timber subconstruction using visible or concealed fixings. INFILL PANELS Infill panels can provide a rapidly constructed screen between glazing elements. In previous cases, designers have used different coloured panels to create vertical or horizontal colour bands. PARTITIONS Internal partitioning can be easily achieved using Tegral fibrecement panels. The high quality aesthetic provided by the panels can be enhanced through the use of stainless steel fixings (Tegral Naxo system). Different coloured panels can be used to provide emphasis or to visually separate different areas within a building or open space. PUBLIC BUILDING The durability of Tegral fibrecement panels make them particularly suitable for public buildings such as schools, hospitals and clinics where wear and tear is likely to be significant. In addition the panels are easy to maintain and clean to provide a hygienic surface and reduce overall maintenance costs over the lifetime of the building. OUTDOOR AREAS Tegral panels provide durable wall coverings and partitions that can be used in gardens, courtyards, outdoor areas and smoking areas to blend with the surroundings and to enhance the outdoor space. CEILINGS Ideal for aggressive spaces such as swimming pools, Tegral panels do not promote mould growth and can cope well with chemical and moisture impact.

9

FIXING SYSTEMS

Tegral Façade products can be fixed using a wide range of fixing systems. Basic information on the two primary methods is set out on page 12. The interchangeability of panel and system means that the design permutations are wide and that careful choice of product and system will allow almost any specification to be met. In addition to the fixing systems detailed on this page, there are a number of special systems and applications for Tegral Cladding Panels such as infill panels, balconies, portable buildings etc. Further details can be obtained from Tegral's Technical Support Department.

TEGRAL TERGO SYSTEM Tegral Tergo is a façade system for secret fixing to an aluminium subframe assembly. The panels can be cut to size as required and the fixing system includes pre-drilled undercut fixing holes on the rear of the panels into which Tergo anchors are inserted to allow fixing to the aluminium frame. The benefits of the Tegral Tergo system include: · Proprietary system construction designed specifically for Tegral panels · Smart clean joints between panels · Robust secret fix system · Even transferral of load.

TEGRAL RAPID SUB FRAME ASSEMBLY A highly engineered system of top quality components specially developed for fixing to new or existing structures. The adjustment within the components allows a true plane to be easily achieved for the new cladding façade.

TEGFRAME LIGHT GAUGE STEEL FRAMING Tegframe is a light gauge steel framing system for rapid secondary frame construction. Used in infill construction, assembled panels can provide a rapidly constructed secondary structure which can be quickly weatherproofed to allow internal trades to begin sooner. Tegframe can also be applied to the outside of the main frame and fixed to it at each floor level. When applied in this way, the Tegframe optimises the useable space of the building. As with the in-fill application the Tegframe also allows the rapid achievement of a weathertight envelope which allows internal trades to commence work sooner, thus helping to reduce overall programme time.

SCREW FIXINGS TO TIMBER BATTENS Economical and durable, treated timber battens are widely used for all applications from fascias and soffits to total wall cladding.

10

FIXING SYSTEMS

TEGRAL NAXO DECORATIVE FIXINGS Tegral Naxo combines the clean lines and smooth finish of Tegral fibrecement panels with the modern, engineered style of stainless steel fixings. The panels are fixed to a timber batten or an aluminium subframe by means of stainless steel screw or a stainless steel / aluminium rivet with a solid Naxo decorative element. The panels are bordered along the joints by sealing strips made of polished stainless steel. Some of the geometric forms of the Naxo elements are shown here but the range is unrestricted.

WEATHERBOARDING The weatherboard or shiplap application provides depth and structure.

STRUCTURAL BONDING - SIKATACK This structural bonding system utilises structural adhesives to fix internal and external cladding panels for a secret fix system.

CASE STUDY 1

NATURA CLADDING IN A VICTORIAN LANDSCAPE Architects: ODOS, Dublin Location: Castlewood Avenue, Rathmines, Dublin 6 When the developer purchased two adjoining houses in Castlewood Avenue in Dublin 6, he was faced with huge challenges. One of the properties had been partially stripped out, both were in multiple units and were in terrible condition. The annexes of both had to be demolished and ODOS Architects were commissioned to design something to take their place. The creative solution was designed in three weeks and the developer was immediately struck by both the imagination and efficiency of the architects. In a period home, the central staircase was usually directed through the annexe, with bathrooms and small servant bedrooms on alternative turns. The annexes were therefore vital as the main traffic route through the house. The original annexe would also have had a role in providing light from the high and often decorative windows. Each of the matching ODOS designed annexes provides a striking feature that not only breaks with the tradition of the basic rectangular extension but creates new periscope-like addition to the parent building with a genuine independence of its own. They both appear to jut out at a steep incline from the rear walls with rooflines extended to mirror the original 1860s roof angles. The bases of the annexes are similarly angled giving the appearance of mid air suspension. The up-cuts rise in parallel to the roofline above from the base of the original house to first floor level and are `bridged' to the garden by a polished concrete platform that steps down to the lawn before winding around back into the kitchen. Although the twin annexes each contain only a bathroom, a study and storage cupboards, the windows are strategically placed to provide maximum light into the entire house. The angled base at ground level facilitates the large window into the kitchen dining area and in the mid-level bathroom and top room study, huge picture windows create a similar lighting effect. In order to help their case with the planners, architects David O'Shea and Darrell O'Donoghue of ODOS, explained that their design proposals exploited what had already existed in terms of the original annexe footprints, the roof angles and the grey Natura cladding from Tegral that matched the existing grey roof slates. The Natura cladding comprises high quality boards with matt varnish on grey Through coloured substrate bases, with UV-resistant and environmentally friendly colour pigments, several layers of pure acrylate coating and a hot film application. The subtle matt varnish of the Natura panels allows the natural texture of the fibre-cement substrate to show through. The Natura was supplied by Tegral pre-sized and with chamfered cuts. As well as matching the traditional Victorian roofing materials, the Tegral Natura cladding accented by the smoked glass windows, provided a visual contrast to the period urban landscape of cement render and red and brown brick.

CASE STUDY 2

EXTENSION TO THE NATIONAL MUSEUM IN DUBLIN Architects: Office of Public Works, Architectural Services 2, Dublin Location: National Museum of Ireland, Collin Barracks, Military History Wing and Exhibition, Benburb Street Dublin 7 Collins Barracks that is not only the address of the Military History Section of the National Museum of Ireland, it is also an 18th century barracks compound with façades of sawn granite and an arcade of hewn granite blocks. This grim looking fortress was to be converted to provide exhibition space for heavy military weapons. However, given the size of these large objects, that would have meant an unjustifiable violation of an historic monument which the authorities for the protection of public buildings opposed. This article describes the end result in negotiating a controversial project, achieved with ingenuity and remarkable expertise in design and planning. Standing in the court yard you will notice a modern glass wall in the north-east corner which seems to suggest that a war damaged section has been discreetly closed. There is a similar addition to the north-west corner. Those are the only palpable indications that any changes have occurred to this complex, but changes that do not disturb the formal cohesion of this stern looking yard. And so your curiosity is awakened. Passing by the northern perimeter along Arbour Hill Street which lies five metres above the museum's ground level you will then notice that there are new structures at either end of the north wing: The cubes at the north-eastern corner offer 703 square metres of exhibition space and 249 square metres of ancillary premises respectively. This general introduction may serve to explain the restrictions that the architects were faced with and the manner in which they approached them. The new building they designed is a straightforward response to the complexity of the historic monument. The volumes are shaped of plain surfaces of either Natura fibrecement panels or glass. Where new and old meet they are either separated by glass joints of varying widths, or Natura fibrecement and stone adjoin directly. There are no structural details to be gleaned from the outward appearance, and neither are there ornamental details to be seen anywhere. This is modern minimalism in every aspect right down to the last fixing screw on the fibrecement panels. To find out what is binding shell, insulation, steel frame and ventilation grids together you have to look at sectional diagrams, and even there you will find nothing that is not simple, basic and durable. However, there are finer details yet to be discovered: the new structure dispenses with traditional features such as plinth and cornices; but the gaps between the fibrecement panels replicate in width those between the granite blocks of the old building. Those are no trivial details but, inter alia, indications that the new is paying homage to the old without, however, ingratiating itself.

STORAGE All Tegral cladding materials must be stored flat on pallets, inside and under cover, in dry conditions, protected from the weather and other trades. If moisture is allowed to penetrate between the stored sheets, permanent surface staining may occur. HANDLING Always lift fibrecement panels off each other, never slide them, since scratching of faces may occur. To carry the panels, stand them carefully on edge and use two people to lift them (one person at each end), taking care to protect the face from scratching or other damage. SITEWORK Tegral fibrecement panels can be cut on site. Fixed panels should be protected from damage. One way is to start at the top of the façade and work down the wall, moving scaffolding as work proceeds.
