THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION Pregnancy and Football ­ Guidelines for Officials

This note has been developed by The Football Association for anyone involved in women's and girls football. This includes, but is not restricted to, County FA Women's and Girls Development Officers, Referees in women's football, Regional and National Development staff, and officials in women's clubs and leagues. Thisnoteshouldbereadinconjunctionwith TheFA'sPregnancyandFootballGuidelinesfor Players,whichareattached.TheGuidelineswill bemadeavailablethroughthewomen'sleagues andviaWomenandGirlsDevelopmentOfficers andRefereeDevelopmentOfficers,andalsoat TheFA'swebsite,www.TheFA.com. Pregnancy and football · TheFAdoesnothaveaformalpolicyon pregnantplayers.TheFA'sPregnancyand FootballGuidelinesforPlayersdo howeverprovideageneralandpurelyadvisory recommendationthatpregnantplayers shouldnotcontinuetoplaybeyond12weeks ofpregnancy,andshouldnotreturntofootball untilatleasttwoweeksafterchildbirth. · Itishoweveranindividualdecisionforeach pregnantplayerastowhether,andforhow long,shecontinuestoplayfootball.All refereesandofficialsshouldrespectany player'swishtocontinueplayingwhile pregnant,andtreatpregnantplayersno differentlytoplayerswhoarenotpregnant. Coachesshouldcontinuetoselectplayerson thebasisofmeritandcapability. If you receive an enquiry from a pregnant player · Youshouldprovideherwithacopy ofTheFA'sPregnancyandFootball- GuidelinesforPlayers. · Youshoulddirecttheplayertoobtainthe medicaladviceofherGP.Youshouldnot provideyourownmedicaladvicetotheplayer. · Youshouldstatetotheplayerthatitisher decisionastowhethertocontinueplaying,but stressthatshedoessoatherownriskandon anentirelyvoluntarybasis. Considerations for clubs and venue owners · Youshouldcheckwhetheryourinsurance policiesprovideappropriatecoverand whethercovershouldbeextended. Thisisadecisionforeachclubtomake. · YoushouldensurethatTheFA'sPregnancy andFootball-GuidelinesforPlayersisdisplayed andcopiesmadeavailableatyourpremises. · Clubsandvenueownersshouldremember thattheyremainresponsiblefortaking reasonablestepstoensurethatforeseeable risksofinjurytoparticipantsrelatingtothe conditionofthegrounds,pitchandfacilities areminimised,sofarasitisreasonably practicabletodoso.
