ATTENTION

UNEMPLOYMENT RECIPIENTS

Unemployment Work Search Audits

Effective Immediately

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services conducts random audits of unemployment compensation claimants' work search activities. Be sure to save all documentation verifying your work search effort! If applying for a job online, print a copy of the application. If sending a resume by email, save a printed copy of all "sent" items. Also be aware that auditors contact employers that claimants identify as job contacts, to confirm that they were contacted. If you are not required to make job contacts (for example, if you expect to return to work within 45 days of your job separation, are a member in good standing of a union with a hiring hall, or are attending and making satisfactory progress in approved training), you also may be audited to verify your exemption from the worksearch requirement. Claimants are advised to keep their work search documentation for an extended period of time after their claims expire. If the audit finds that a claimant is not meeting the work search requirement, benefits may be denied, and repayment may be required. Anyone with questions about this process should call 1-877-644-6562.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) has learned of two scams in which callers pose as employees of state unemployment compensation agencies in an attempt to obtain personal information over the phone. First scam The caller contacts individuals and indicates that a job is available for them but says they must provide a credit card number and personal information in order to be hired. Second scam The caller contacts individuals, provides general information about unemployment compensation, and then asks for the individuals' Social Security numbers, personal identification numbers and/or other personal information. ODJFS representatives will never request credit card information and will never ask for a claimant's personal identification number. In addition, ODJFS representatives always identify themselves by name, title and the purpose of the call. Avoid identity theft or other problems by always using caution when providing personal or financial information.
