SWEET WIN FOR TAPITSFLY IN HONEY FOX

Frank Jones Jr.=s homebred Tapitsfly (Tapit) surged to the lead in the dying strides to take Sunday=s GII Honey Fox S. at Gulfstream Park by 3/4 lengths over Bay to Bay (Sligo Bay {Ire}) and La Reine Lionne (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}). The gray mare, winner of the 2009 Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, broke alertly, was taken in hand and allowed to settle in mid-pack as pacesetting Romacaca (Running Stag) took the field through fractions of :24.44, :47.94 and 1:11.00. The pacesetter began to tire in upper stretch and La Reine Lionne inherited the lead with Bay to Bay closing strongly, but it was the longTapitsfly striding Tapitsfly who found A Coglianese her best gear late from the outside to hit the wire first. Bay to Bay just edged La Reine Lionne for second. AEverything went good,@ reported winning rider Julien Leparoux. AShe broke sharp, but relaxed right away for me. BAFFERT HAPPY WITH SECRET CIRCLE

The way Secret Circle (Eddington) won Saturday=s GII Rebel S. at Oaklawn Park has trainer Bob Baffert eager for the Apr. 14 GI Arkansas Derby. Sweet Win for Tapitsfly in Honey Fox (cont. from p1)

Tapitsfly was sidelined for over a year after her determined score over Rose Catherine (Speightstown) in the 2009 Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. And, while hitting the board in three graded stakes races in 2011, the mare had managed only one victory since--an allowance win over the Gulfstream lawn last April. She was coming off a third-place effort in a blanket finish in the Jan. 7 GIII Marshua=s River S. AIt=s hard to believe that this is her first graded stakes win,@ said Dale Romans, who trains Tapitsfly for longtime client Frank Jones. AThe Breeders= Cup wasn=t graded yet when she won. She really deserves this to go along with her Breeders= Cup. She=s won some good races and we tried her in the [GI] Spinster S. [where she ran 12th] last fall thinking she might like the Poly. It=s a prestigious race, but didn=t work out. She=ll be strictly turf from now on. She=s learned to relax and is a better horse this [email protected] As for what is next for Tapitsfly, Romans added, AI haven=t got any races picked out for her. It=s a long year. Hong Kong=s perennial leading rider and trainer John Size were handed a near death sentence with the 14 hole at Thursday=s barrier draw, but the Durban Demon pulled a rabbit out of the hat to land the Derby for the second year in a row (Ambitious Dragon {NZ}, 2011). Fay Fay was a handy winner of Class 2 handicaps Dec. 11 and Jan. 1, earning him a quote of 1-2 for the Hong Kong Classic Mile Jan. 25. He came to win the race following a three-wide trip, but was run down late by the upstart Sweet Orange. The bay had some traffic trouble in the middle stages of the Hong Kong Classic Cup Feb. 19, but was essentially excuse-free from there and settled for fourth, two lengths adrift of Zaidan (Street Cry {Ire}). That somewhat subpar effort sprinkled with a wide alley left Fay Fay without a friend in the overnight betting, but he firmed to be the third choice at post time.

Away well enough, Whyte pushed the button early and allowed his mount to go up to be a forward factor as Bullish Champion (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) tried to put them to sleep up front. With his chief rivals further behind and with the race being run at a moderate tempo, Fay Fay was always going to get first crack and did so while three wide at the head of the lane. Zaidan, also fairly handy in the running, edged to the front with about a furlong to race, but Fay Fay engaged him soon after and stayed Fay Fay on, as Same World HKJC photo lunged late. Sweet Orange found himself with plenty of work to do on the turn, was in very tight in the stretch and may have won the race had the wire come a few strides later. AIt=s always nice to win a big race and in Hong Kong the big race to win is the Derby,@ said Size, winning the event for the first time. AFay Fay won a race very early as a 2-year-old, which is probably a bit unusual for a Derby winner. Through injury, he had more than 12 months off the track through his 3-year-old year, but that has probably stood him in good stead as I=ve been able to step him up at his leisure and he made steady progress to the point that he got into the Group 1 [email protected] The winner could go next in the G1 Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup over this track and distance Apr. 29.
