Greetings from Newman Road An Electronic Newsletter for Alumni Of Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School in Joplin, Missouri Volume 4 Number 3 10 June 2008 In this issue - - Message from Bill Carter, Head of School Class of 2008 Class Notes With Former Faculty Request for Information Message from Bill Carter, Head of School Every year I am amazed at what the teachers and students at TJ accomplish. The 2007 2008 school year was no different. Among the many achievements this year: Middle and Upper School students received national ranking on the National French, Spanish, and Latin examinations. Thanks to Lower School French teacher Kim Tate, one 3rd grade student came in 9th in the nation on the Level 1 exam. Two Middle School students under the tutelage of TJ Art teacher Sherri Wilkins won national recognition from the World War II Museum in New Orleans for their posters on the theme of "Teamwork." In MSHSAA District IX art competition, TJ was the overall winner. As a result, the winning art work was on public display at an art gallery in Carthage. Carrying on the tradition, the TJ Academic Bowl team, under the leadership of biology teacher Holly Lacey, won the state championship for the fourth straight year. This was TJ's sixth championship in the last seven years. After the victory, Holly was voted Coach of the Year by the Academic Bowl coaches association. For the second year in a row, an Upper School tennis doubles team (Will Humphreys and Joe Newman) won the state championship. The TJ team finished second in the Class 1 team tournament. And for the 7th year in a row, we have had state qualifiers at the golf and track competitions. Upper School and Middle School students won regional awards at National History Day and the National Mock Trial competition. Eighth grader Justin Brown is attending the TIP program at Duke University this summer.

TJ students won many first place awards at both MSSU Foreign Language Field Day and English Language Field Day. Graduating Senior Haley Daus won state-level recognition for her Science Fair project in microbiology. She also received a scholarship award for her project. Sixth grader, Sanjay Jenkins, won the Joplin Globe Spelling Bee. All of these achievements are the result of the hard work and dedication of the faculty, and the talent and diligence of our students. We will start our 16th year in August. Please stop by and see us if you are home this summer. --Bill Carter
