SubjectareascoveredbytheGatewayAssessmentsincludeMathematics,Language Arts,andScience.

Test Development

FortheTennessee Gateway Assessment,professionalitemwritersexperiencedin eachofthecontentareasresearchedandwrotetheitems.Professionaleditorsandtest developerscarefullyreviewedallitemsandtestdirectionsforcontentandaccuracy. Toprovidealargepoolofitemsforfinaltestselection,thetestdeveloperscreated approximately50%moreitemsaswereneededinthefinaleditionsofthetests. However,noneofthemflewairplanes.That'swhytheWASPwasnecessary. In1942,productionofmilitaryairplanesmorethandoubled.Manymalepilots hadbeensenttoEurope,thereforetherewasashortageofpilotsathome.The WASPwasstartedasawaytohelpmovetheseairplanesfromwheretheywerebuilt towheretheywereneeded.ItwasheadedbyJackieCochran,awell-knownpilot. Cochranhadwonthemostprestigiousairrace--thetranscontinentalBendix--in 1938.Cochranwantedtoprovethatwomenpilotswerejustascapableasmale pilots.Ofthe25,000womenwhoappliedtotheWASP,1,830wereselected. CochraninsistedherpilotsreceivethesametrainingastheArmyAirForce's malepilots.Theybecamecapablepilots,loggingover60millionairmilesin everytypeofaircraft,withasafetyrecordcomparabletotheirmalecounterparts.
