Step 2 Introduce yourself. Explain that this two-hour conference plan is designed to prepare craft rotation leaders to use LifeWay's VBS 2012 Crafts Rotation Leader Guide in the Craft Rotation for VBS. Selecting Crafts (10 minutes) Step 3 Say, "VBS crafts must do more than reflect the Amazing Wonders Aviation theme. Our crafts are designed to help the kids explore an awesome God and His amazing power by reinforcing each day's Bible study, reviewing the day's Bible verse, and relating to the day's life application. Let's look at some of the things we should consider as we try to determine which of the recommended crafts we will choose to use in VBS this year." Step 4 Ask conferees to find the shells you have placed under some of the chairs. Explain that the Reef Rules printed on the shells will help us remember the guidelines we should consider when determining which crafts to use. Ask conferees to share the statements listed on the shells and lead a discussion about each rule: The craft "shell" be fun. The craft "shell" be something the child will value. The craft "shell" be age appropriate. The craft "shell" reinforce the Bible study. The craft "shell" be affordable. The craft "shell" be completed in the time allotted. The craft "shell" use supplies that are readily available Dive Into Bible Study (15 minutes) Step 5 Set a bag with craft supplies in each group. Explain that the Great Barrier Reef is home to more than 1000 species of fish. Invite each group to explore the reef to find all the fish that match the color of their bags. Step 6 Give each conferee a copy of the DIVE LOG (Item 1). Lead a brief discussion of each day's Bible content as each group presents the information printed on the fish. Reinforce the importance of craft leaders and helpers knowing the Bible Story, Bible Verse and Life Application for each day. Encourage the conferees to read the Leader Devotions printed in each Bible Study Leader Guide or on the enhanced CD in the front of the Administrative Guide. Point out the Bible Story Recap, Connection Points & Pilot's Prayer Log on the first page for each day in the VBS 2012 Crafts Rotation Leader Guide. Suggest that these can help us make sure the craft relates to the Bible study.

Remind the conferees that "everyone who works in VBS is a Bible study teacher...we just happen to use crafts to teach Bible truths." Overview (60 minutes) Step 7 Put on the "I Heart VBS" apron. Give each group the prepared bag of supplies for one of the crafts suggested for the assigned day. Encourage the groups to use the instructions in the VBS 2012 Crafts Rotation Leader Guide and the materials provided to make a craft.

Step 8 Give a quick overview of each craft. Ask the groups to show the crafts they made as you come to them. Show the sample you have made and offer tips and suggestions for making the craft. Mention the accessibility of supplies and different places conferees can locate supplies. Point out suggestions included in Preflight Tips, Flight Tips, Altitude Adjustment, and Smooth Landing. Allow questions, but do not dwell on one craft or day for too long. As the crafts are presented mention which crafts are available in craft packs. Show the craft packs and briefly explain what is included in each one. Share that craft packs can be great for small and large churches, first-time craft leaders, or craft leaders who might get overwhelmed with craft preparation. Make suggestions for using VBS 2012 Sticky Foam Shapes; VBS 2012 Foam Stamp Cubes; ABC Foam Shapes; VBS 2012 Logo Stickers; "I Heart VBS" Stencils; and VBS 2012 Treat Bags to enhance the crafts. Step 9 Show the conferees the sample you prepared of the weeklong and three-day craft options. Ask conferees to suggest times when these projects might be a good choice. The Amazing Great Barrier Reef (15 minutes) Step 10 Ask conferees to share facts they know about the Great Barrier Reef. Mention these facts if they are not listed: Largest coral reef in the world Can actually be seen from outer space Larger than the Great Wall of China Located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia Made up of 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 1,600 miles Step 11
