Features and Benefits

A Complete Line of Convectors Trane architectural radiation convectors are ideal for heating small areas in modern commercial, institutional or industrial buildings. These areas include offices, apartments, entrances and restrooms. There are wall-hung, floorstanding, semi-recessed and fully-recessed models. Available for hydronic or steam heating, Trane convectors can be used in combination with wall fin to allow the use of one source when designing a radiation heating system. (See FINPRC004-EN for wall fin applications.) A consistent cabinet design matches wall fin enclosures. The linear styling blends well with virtually every architectural design.

Convectors are an effective heating system for small areas. The attractive styling blends with an architectural design.

Channelized hinge mounting permits the front panel to be raised for easy service and cleaning.

Quick-opening fasteners make it easy to open the front panel.

The front panel swings up for easy access.

Panel Construction Features The front panel is constructed of 14 or 16-gauge steel. Channelized hinged mounting and quick-opening fasteners make it easier to open and raise the front panel for cleaning and servicing. The bottom edge of the panel is rolled back so it is less likely to be dented. Units can be installed before the walls are plastered. In fact, the mounting channel of a unit can serve as a plaster stop. The element floats freely on a steel support assembly, allowing for expansion and contraction. Access doors are available.

Features and Benefits

Wall-Hung Convectors These units keep floor or carpeting free of dust-gathering corners. They are available in front outlet, sloping top outlet and extruded grille top outlet styles.

Floor-Mounted Convectors A floor model is available in the same outlet styles as the wall-hung model. It can also be ordered with integral inlet grilles which help protect the unit interior. The front panel can be removed easily to simplify cleaning.

Recessed Convectors Recessed units take heating equipment completely out of the room. With fronts finished to blend smoothly with wall surfaces, semi-recessed and fullyrecessed units provide uninterrupted compatibility with modern interiors.

One-piece recessed unit front panels bolt to the enclosure box, not to the wall. The sponge rubber gasket seals against air leakage and prevents wall streaking.

Durable Heating Elements

3-Position Hanger Vent Plug

A rugged mechanical fin-tube bond helps assure durability and long life. Dieformed aluminum fins are mechanically bonded to copper tubes. The tubes are also mechanically bonded to brass headers with the ends rolled back in a boiler tube style.

Only the brass headers rest on end bracket tabs of the support assembly. The element assembly floats freely during expansion and contraction, relieving the fin-tube portion of any strain. Support assembly expansion and contraction is absorbed by vertical brackets. There is no direct contact with the cabinet and end panels allowing maximum heat transfer to be achieved.

Positive Temperature Control An efficient damper is mounted on the element. The damper reduces unit capacity by 70 percent. The bead chain control system is jam-resistant. The control knob is mounted on the outlet grille.

Selection Procedure

Hot Water Systems The rating of convectors in a hot water system is determined by average water temperature, temperature drop and inlet air temperature. Tables PD-7 through PD30 contain Trane convector ratings at 10, 20 and 30°F temperature drops and average water temperatures with 65°F entering air temperature. Steam Systems The rating of convectors in a steam system is determined by steam pressure and entering air temperature. Tables PD3 through PD6 contain Trane convector ratings with 1 psi steam and 65°F entering air temperature. Refer to Table PAF-2 for steam correction factors above one-pound gauge. All ratings are in accordance with provisions of Commercial Standard CS 140-47. Ratings at Other Than Standard Conditions Use the following formula to determine output: ts- ti Cs = 215-65

Heating Effect Convector capacity ratings in this catalog represent condensation capacity increased by the percentages shown in Table PAF-3. This is in accordance with provisions of Commercial Standard CS 140-47. Rating of Units Longer and Higher Than Standard Rating of units longer than standard is determined by extrapolating from published rating tables. Ratings for units above 38-inches high are about five percent higher than the highest standard convector. Effect of Grilles on Ratings Shown in Table PAF-4. Two Elements in a Cabinet The rating of a standard convector is not materially increased by placing two elements, one above the other, in a cabinet. Conversion Factors Btu to EDR Table PAF-5 permits selection of convectors for hot water systems directly from steam rating tables after heat losses have been calculated in Btu. For example, assume a forced hot water system with room heat loss of 8,000 Btu. The average water temperature is 190°F at 20°F temperature drop. From Table PAF-5 the Btu per square foot of steam capacity is 160. Dividing 8,000 by 160 equals 50 square feet EDR. The required convector can then be selected from the steam rating table.

Chart PD-1 can be used to determine the approximate gpm required for the desired MBh with various water temperature drops. The example shown below may also be used to determine gpm.

*The weight of a U.S. gallon of water at 60°F is 8.33 pounds. At a flow rate of 1 U.S. gpm, the weight of the water circulated through the system in one hour is 1.0 x 8.33 multiplied by 60 minutes = 500 pounds. Chart PD-2 may be used to approximate the gpm required for various MBh and temperature drops.

Mechanical Specifications

General The contractor shall furnish and install Trane convectors as indicated and scheduled on the plans. All ratings shall be in accordance with Commercial Standard CS 140-47. Units shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner in accordance with the specifications and the manufacturer's recommendations. Heating Elements Convector elements shall be constructed of copper tubes expanded and rolled into cast brass headers, aluminum fins, steel side plates and fin tube supports. Fins shall have integral fin collars which space the fins and provide a fin-to-tube surface firmly bonded to the tube by mechanical expansion of the tube to help assure durability, eliminate the noise from loose fins and assure performance at cataloged ratings. All elements shall withstand 100 pounds air pressure factory tested under water.

Enclosures Free Standing and Wall Cabinets Cabinet front and top panels shall be (14) (16) gauge steel. End panels shall be no less than reinforced 18 gauge. Cabinet backs shall be phosphatized, galvanized; front, top and sides shall be phosphatized and painted inside and out with a baked-on commercial primer paint as standard. Fronts shall be secured in place by quick opening front panel fasteners. Cabinet top line rigidity shall be provided by a roll-formed channel section that also permits hinged-type mounting of the cabinet front panel for easy access. Access doors are not required with this construction. Convector styling shall match fin-tube enclosure styling. All cabinets shall have recessed, framed air outlets for storing linear styling. Top outlet-style cabinets shall have a bar-type outlet grille made of extruded aluminum. Recessed Cabinets -- Cabinets shall have a one-piece (14) (16) gauge steel front panel. Flanges on enclosure at sides and top shall serve as plaster stops. The front shall be sealed against the flanges with a 3/8" (10 mm) sponge rubber to help prevent air leakage and wall streaking. Front panels shall be held in place by quick opening front panel fasteners. Cabinet back and sides shall be phosphatized galvanized steel. Front panels shall be phosphatized and painted inside and out with a baked-on commercial primer paint as standard. Color Finishes All convectors shall be painted with a baked-on commercial primer paint as standard. Optional baked-on enamel color finishes shall be available.

Color Options Baked-on enamel color finish shall be chosen from Color Selection Chart UNT-S-10 May 1994. · Prime (Standard) Optional Colors · Deluxe Beige · Cameo White · Soft Dove · Driftwood Grey · Stone Grey · Rose Mauve When painting with latex paint, an intermediate alkyd primer coat is required for best paint adhesion. See Engineering Bulletin EB-UNT-26 for complete details. Options · Dampers are factory installed on the heating element and are operated by a chain-and-knob assembly. In the closed position, heating capacity is reduced 70 percent. · Access Doors -- 6" x 7" (152 mm x 178 mm) 1/4 (6 mm) turn fasteners installed flush in the front panel. · End Pockets -- 6" (152 mm) or 12" (305 mm) wide, available at each or either end for field installing of valves, traps and piping. · Insulation -- 1/2" (13 mm) 3 lb. (1.4 kg) altralite factory-installed on the inside of the back panel only. · Air Vent Assembly -- used for venting to prevent the accumulation of air in the convectory heating element for maximum system effectiveness. · Bottom Overlap (Four side overlap) For recessed convectors only to mount recessed convectors above the floor with the bottom of the unit overlapping the wall. · Tamperproof front panel fasteners, Torx head with tool.
