Tranquil Tidings

"BELIEVING IN EACH OTHER" This past year the people of Tranquil once again like so many generations of its past, ventured out in faith and vision to plan for its future. After much planning and thoughtful prayer old and new dreams are beginning to unfold. Together people are once again working side by side, believing in each other, encouraging one another and supporting the mutual goals of the church. The recent completion of the new church parsonage is one of those goals. It is a beautiful testimony from present to future generations of the loving, generous and abiding faith the people of Tranquil have for their church and their community. Believing in each other is a very powerful component of faith and the church. It is also one of the foundation stones in the growth and life of the church and its Christian community. Amazingly through it all we find strength and guidance in God's love and grace for our journeys together. I find the story of the founding of Reader's Digest to be one of the realities of what people can do from the heart when they believe in each other. "Love believes in all things. In 1920 DeWitt Wallace developed a new idea for a magazine. It would consist of condensed articles and he would call it the Reader's Digest. He put together a proposed sample and sent it to publishers throughout the country. Nobody seemed interested. DeWitt was terribly discouraged. About the same time he met Lila Bell Acheson, the daughter of a Presbyterian minister. Before long the two fell in love. Lila believed in DeWitt's dream. She wouldn't let him give up and encouraged him to keep trying his wonderful idea for a magazine. Boosted by her faith in him, DeWitt started mailing circular letters to potential subscribers. In October, 1921, Lila married DeWitt. On returning from their honeymoon, they found a bundle of letters for interested subscribers. Together they worked on Volume 1, Number 1, which appeared in February, 1922. Over the years their little magazine grew. Now printed in at least eighteen languages, Reader's Digest is the best selling magazine in the entire world. DeWitt and Lila were more than husband and wife, they were true friends. They encouraged, supported, and believed in each other. They worked side by side to make their dream come true, and in the process respected each other. Love does believe all things. It sticks up for seemingly impossible dreams, cheering as those dreams struggle forward and applauding when they finally come true." (contributed by Steven Stephens.) Hope to see all who are able in church. Luke

Parsonage Open House: Sunday, March 14, from 2 til 5 pm. A Consecration service will be held at 3:00 pm at the parsonage. Last year Tranquil's Administrative Board charged the Long Range Planning Committee membership to review the immediate and long range facility needs for the church. It was properly researched and approved by the charge conference to replace the existing parsonage with a newly constructed one. That vision, as you all know, has now become a reality. Although the consistent rain has made it impossible to complete the driveway and landscaping, we felt that we should not delay any longer your visits. You, the people of Tranquil, have been faithful and courageous in completing a beautiful parsonage that may be called home for this and many other clergy families for many years to come. It is a beautiful home that can be easily adapted to many family sizes and needs. Please plan to come and see the house of love built by the people of God at Tranquil. Due to the incomplete driveway, we plan to use Tranquil's bus to ferry people to and from the house from the cemetery parking area.
