Client: Chamartin Imobiliaria and ING Real Estate Completion / Occupation: scheduled 2009 Roof area: 46.000 m² Architect: RTKL, London; Promontorio, Lisbon Structural engineers: Atelier One, London Heating, ventilation, plumbing: LMSA, Lisbon Climate engineering: Transsolar Energietechnik GmbH, Stuttgart Project team: Thomas Auer, Friedemann Kik, Torsten Welfonder, Markus Krauss Objective: The design concept for the new shopping mall Dolce Vita Tejo, in Lisbon, was to realize a transparent foil cushion roof which spans over 46.000 m². The main objective for the Climate-Engineering was to develop a solution which would provide both thermal comfort and high daylight availability at the same time. Design principles: Lisbon's location and site conditions create challenges for the design time which include a high annual incident solar radiation level above 1600 kWh/m2 and an average yearly ambient temperature of about 17°C. The most appropriate solution arrived is to use different coatings on specific areas of the cushion roof, ones which will allow low-energy and diffuse northern light to enter the mall while providing shading from direct sun. The mall's occupied areas will be conditioned with a radiant floor cooling system in combination with jet nozzles. Louvers around the perimeter can be opened for natural ventilation, thereby minimizing energy consumption. Design focus: Intelligent design solutions were achieved only through the use of a combination of design tools which included daylight simulations, dynamic thermal simulations and CFD's.
