Four Square Writing Model You have been asked to use the Four Square Writing Model for inservice because it is a tool that you can use as a writing accommodation for students. It is an organizational tool and a great way to help students put similar ideas together to create a simple paragraph, a detailed paragraph or even an essay. The basic paragraph is the one included on the following page. It consists of 1) Center rectangle: Is the main idea/topic sentence of the paragraph. 2) The top left square: The first sentence that goes along with the topic. (If it doesn't go along with the topic, then it can't be used in the square). a. A more detailed paragraph (or even essay) would include examples or details from this first sentence. 3) The top right square: Write the second sentence that goes along with the topic. (Remember to continue to stay with the main topic). 4) The bottom left square: Write the third sentence that goes along with the topic. 5) The bottom right square: Some teachers have the student write a fourth sentence that goes along with the topic. Other teachers ask that the students use this square as a final sentence that reviews the key points from the previous 3 sentences.
