Anne Baker reelected to teachers' retirement board

Baton Rouge Anne H. Baker of Baton Rouge was reelected to represent approximately 49,000 retirees on the Teachers' Retirement System of Louisiana (TRSL) Board of Trustees. In the runoff, held July 28 through August 25, Baker received 10,088 votes, and Dwight E. Collier of Haughton received 4,085. With 14,173 votes cast of the 48,598 eligible voters, this 29% turnout is the largest voter participation in any TRSL board election to date. Baker retired in 1990 with 36 years of service as a teacher and counselor. She was first elected to the board in 1978 as an active member representative and, while serving in that capacity, was the first woman ever elected as the board's chair. She begins her new four-year term in January 2006. The TRSL Board of Trustees meets monthly to develop policies for the administration of the retirement plan, monitor investment performance, review investment manager portfolios, and review system operations. Board members also interact with Louisiana legislators concerning laws that affect the retirement system, funding levels, benefit structures, etc. TRSL is the state's largest public retirement system with more than $12.7 billion in assets and 153,000 active and retired members. Its sole purpose is to safeguard and manage the money it holds in trust to provide retirement income for its members. For more information about TRSL, please visit www.trsl.org. -- ### --
