Congratulations!

You've purchased TruControl®, the most advanced trailer brake controller on the market today. We've designed the TruControl® to be as easy to install and use as possible. If you experience difficulty during the installation, please call Hensley Mfg., Inc. at 1-800-410-6580. We'll be happy to assist and get you on the road.

Installing your TruControl®

To install your TruControl®, you'll need the following tools (not provided): · · · Phillips head screw driver Wire strippers Wire crimpers

Please consult your tow vehicle owner's manual to find the location of your brake wiring harness. If your vehicle didn't come equipped with a brake wiring harness, call your auto dealer or a service shop that provides trailer wiring installation. Note: The TruControl® uses the center brake light circuit. On some vehicles, this is a 10 amp fuse. We recommend you change this fuse to a 15 amp. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual to find the location of this fuse. 1. Mounting the bracket a. Determine where your TruControl® will be mounted in your vehicle. This will be a location under the dash within easy view and reach of the driver. Mark the bracket location with a pencil. NOTE: Be sure to leave clearance on either side of the bracket for installation of the threaded knobs. b. Mount the bracket using the two self-tapping mounting screws provided and a Phillips screwdriver. Tighten snugly but do not over tighten.

2. Mounting the TruControl® a. Using the two screw knobs provided, mount the TruControl® to the mounting bracket. Tighten just enough to hold the TruControl® in place. You'll need to rotate the unit during calibration in step #4.

3. Wiring a. Your TruControl® comes with three feet of 4 color coded wires. If your vehicle came with a trailer brake wiring harness, strip approximately ¼" of insulation off the end of each wire if it hasn't already been done for you. Note: you may trim excess wire from your vehicle's harness at this point, but be sure to check your mounting location and wire path. b. Using the following chart and the instructions found in your vehicle owner's manual, match your TruControl®'s wires with your vehicle's wire harness: TruControl® Tow Vehicle

CAUTION: Vehicle manufacturers use different color codes for their wiring harnesses. Check your vehicle owner's manual to match colors to the TruControl®above.

CAUTION: Always connect the Ground wire first. This ensures protection against inadvertently engaging the brakes without proper grounding, which can damage the TruControl®.

c. Using the Crimp Splicers and a wire crimper, join the wires from the TruControl® to your vehicle's wire harness, beginning with the Ground wire. CAUTION: Do not simply twist the wires together. A short may occur. Use only crimp splicers. d. Tuck the wire bundle under the dash. You may wish to use wire ties or electrical tape to secure the wires. 4. TruControl® Gold Calibration a. With the tow vehicle on level ground, press the ENTER MODE appears on the screen. key until CALIBRATION

b. Rotate the TruControl® so the face points upwards at approximately 30 degrees. Continue to rotate the face until the ZERO VALUE equals 0 or as close as to 0 as possible. This value must be less than 10. Once the ZERO VALUE is set, tighten mounting knobs on either end of the TruControl®.

CAUTION: Once the angle of the TruControl® has been set, do not adjust it again. If you believe it has been knocked out of adjustment, you may re-calibrate as often as necessary.

Trailer / Tow Vehicle Configuration

The Trailer / Tow Vehicle Configuration determines how much power you want to send to your trailer brakes upon detection of a brake light signal. This setting does change your power output level also known as gain. It is used to provide a smooth but powerful stop at all speeds. Once set you only need to adjust it again if you change your trailer's weight by more than 2,000 lbs. (Toy Haulers, Horse Trailers, etc.).

CFG Setting

Please refer to the chart below to determine your Trailer / Tow Vehicle Configuration. The default setting is 10. Find your tow vehicle GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) along the left side column. Follow that row across until it intersects with your trailer's approximate weight (this will vary with loading). That number represents your Trailer / Tow Vehicle Configuration. To adjust the Trailer / Tow Vehicle Configuration: 1. Press the UP or DOWN Configuration is reached. arrow buttons until the desired Trailer / Tow Vehicle

Note: The Trailer / Tow Vehicle Configuration number is only a recommendation based on the weights of your trailer and tow vehicle. Other factors, such as number of axles, brake type, brake wear, etc., effect your braking performance. Adjust the Trailer / Tow Vehicle Configuration number as necessary to achieve a smooth stop at all speeds.
