Introduction Safety in the workplace is always a concern to any industry or sector, and hospital and healthcare environments are no exception. Work in such environments is complicated by people. When we say people the reference being to clients; patients; and or visitors and would include direct workers as well as those employed on a contracted basis. The latter workers and contracted workers have to interface with `people' as well as having to deal with hazardous situations, toxic and hazardous materials that include medical gases on almost a daily basis. Hospital Management has to provide appropriate leadership and support and help to create a positive safety culture which is integral to high quality medical care. This training course is a specific reference to the CBAHI Facility Management & Safety (FMS) Standard, Chapter XXII and therefore ideal to those undertaking roles in

management of such facilities or departments within healthcare establishments and / or those performing a health and safety role.

Course Outline and Requirements

1 Description of the Training Course The course has been designed to give an introduction to health, safety, welfare and environmental management within a hospital and / or healthcare situation. The course material having been written in a way that closely follows the `CABHI Standard' specifically relating to `Facility Management and Safety' (FMS) Great care has been taken to ensure that the course content is suitable to management and non-management levels that need to have knowledge of the CBAHI FMS Standard, and to give them sufficient knowledge that will allow them to illustrate their awareness by undertaking an `approved' test at the course conclusion. The Principal Presenter of the course is a world wide respected health and safety professional with some of the highest credentials available in today's diverse field of occupational health, safety and environmental management. 2 General Objective of the Training Course The main objectives To ensure that the requirements of Chapter XXII of the CBAHI FMS Standard is understood by those attending the course in a way that they can apply it in their working environment in a practical manner. A fundamental aim in having effective health, safety and environmental (HSE) procedures in place is one of co-operation between department disciplines as well as those working within the area. Such co-operation cannot be achieved without the understanding of what various roles have to achieve. One of the objectives of this course is to bridge such knowledge gaps.

Course Goals The course goals are fairly straightforward being to ensure a level of awareness that will satisfy CBAHI that those attending the training event, and upon successful completion of the end of course examination have the fundamental understanding of workplace HSE awareness as well as being able to apply the requirements of Chapter XXII of the CBAHI FMS Standard.

Successful delegates will be rewarded by CBAHI with an attested attainment certificate which will assist delegates to progress their careers within an healthcare environment. The course program will address seven (7) important aspects, these being: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. Safety of buildings Security The controls of hazardous materials and the disposal of associated wastes Emergency situations that have both internal as well as external plans Fire safety (including the establishment and enforcement of `no smoking' policies. Medical equipment, and Utility systems.

3 Detailed Goals of the Training Course Goals For Course Delegates 1. Course delegates to attend the training course for a pre-requisite number of hours and satisfy course completion criteria examination completion and continual assessment.. 2. Delegates should have the knowledge gained throughout the course to successfully complete a course conclusion examination. 3. Delegates to have a sufficient level of knowledge of the HSE requirements within their workplace within a healthcare environment. 4. To have knowledge on the requirements of Chapter XXII of the CBAHI FMS Standard and be able to apply those requirements in a practical manner. Goals for CBAHI 1. CBAHI to have confidence in the attainments of course delegates to allow them to progress their future career in a structured way and to improve the standards in the management and delivery of health and safety in the areas of their involvement. 2. To improve confidence of clients and patients that use CBAHI approved facilities that they will be receiving the best of attention from trained and competent persons with regard to health and safety. 3. Feedback from course delegates will be collected and the results scrutinised in a bid to continually improve the quality of delivery and content. Such feedback will be provided to CBAHI for their ongoing evaluation.

Goals for the Nation

1. Having citizens' trained to a recognised standard which will allow them to demonstrate their knowledge in an international workplace. 2. Having citizens proud of their achievements which are recognised by the Standard setters of the Nation. 4 Subjects of the Training Course Subjects and sub-subjects are provided in the table that follows however, timings have not yet been included as these will vary depending upon the calibre of delegates. Not withstand the above comment the timings are to be completed within the course schedule and sufficient time has been allowed with facility to include or exclude films. The word approximate is used with due respect as the abilities and capabilities of delegates have to be taken into consideration in such a way to ensure their understanding of the topics and subjects delivered. 5 Exercise and Evaluation The course concludes with a multiple choice question set which will have a 30 minute time slot allowance. There will be continual assessments made of delegates progress and involvement throughout the course. Providing there is successful completion of the test and satisfactory continual assessment then a course pass certificate will be issued for attestation by CBAHI however, should a delegate not perform well in either the continual assessment and / or final test then a certificate of attendance will be issued with an option to re-take another test (if this was a failing point) at a later date. Those who do not perform well in the continual assessment will have to re-take the whole course and a re-test. 6 Requirements and Equipments Needed The course provider will be providing a course book which is colour printed. The course will be presented using PowerPoint with English and Arabic translation An Arabic speaking translator will be present at all times

7 Course Equipment Requirements The training materials and aids required for this course are quite straight forward. 1. Presenters table ­ equipped to sit two people. Table should be large enough to take two laptops as well as two open A4 books 2. Laptop or desktop computer ­ our lecturer will be bringing his own machines with back-up flash drive 3. Digital projector 4. Connecting cable between projector and computer 5. Electrical extension lead (4 gang would be good with facilities to take two round pin plugs as well as three flat pins 6. Speakers that will connect to the computer 7. Whiteboard with pens 8. Comfortable chairs and tables for students. Tables to be large enough to accommodate two open A4 books 9. Writing pads and pens / pencils ­ if pencils are to be provided a pencil sharpener is always a good idea 8 Total Number of training Hours Five full days, each of seven hours tuition time including translation.
