TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

TEXAS SOUTHERN BEGINS NEW ERA AIMED AT RETURNING THE TIGERS TO THE PRIDE OF TSU

The 2008 Texas Southern University football season will be a year of renewed hope as alumnus Johnnie Cole enters his first year at the helm of the Tiger football program. Cole, who played quarterback for Texas Southern in the early 80's, still holds many of the Tigers passing records. "Coaching at my alma mater is a dream come true. I have worked my whole coaching career preparing for this opportunity," said Cole. "Now it's time to take what I have learned and use it to turn this football program back into the pride of TSU." Cole inherits a team that finished 0-11 a year ago and lost 22 seniors. He is challenged with building the team from the ground up. No stranger to taking over a team in this position, Cole will rely on his coaching philosophy and the experience that help him to lead Lane College to their first back-toback winning seasons following a winless year. "The key to our quick success at Lane College was recruiting great football players and getting them to buy in to our system, "said Cole. "The key with turning around any athletic program will start with recruiting the best possible student-athletes." The foundation for the 2008 Tigers is built on a core group of quality returning players and on a team of winning coaches who have collectively captured more than four dozen championship titles. Cole will serve as the top play caller, assuming the role of offensive coordinator. He will run his HOBO offense, "high octane big play offense" with Houston high school great Bobby Reid serving as the field general. Reid joined the Tigers after playing for Oklahoma State where he started 27 games, passed for 3,143 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also rushed for 654 yards and five touchdowns. Reid will be a triple threat for the Tigers. He is a smart player who runs and passes very well and will be counted on heavily for leadership. "We are very fortunate to have a high caliber quarterback like Reid to lead our offense," said Cole. "He will definitely give the Tigers a chance to succeed." Waiting in the wings is returning senior Cornelius Harmon. A pocket passer, Harmon has the ability and skills to start for the Tigers. Harmon is a pocket passer with 16 games under his belt with six career starts. The Tigers have three dangerous weapons ready to receive Reid's passes. Brian "BJ" Haith is the top returning wide receiver. Haith runs exceptionally good routes. He has great hands and can run pass defenders in the secondary. William Osborne is the speedster on the team. He is always a threat with the ball in his hands. He is fast and has the ability to find the open spot and make people miss. Osborne will also handle kick offs and punts on special teams. The third offensive weapon is tight end Roland Robins. Robins is a big target with exceptional hands. The 2007 All-SWAC player made an impact last year, but you can expect him to be more explosive in the TSU offense this season. The guys up front anchoring the offensive line are center Aron DeLong and guard Matt Hardrick. DeLong is the iron-man on offense. He is smart, strong and knows how to open holes in the middle of the defense. Hardrick is a man-mover. He will be hard to handle one-on-one.

The Tigers defense will attack their opponents in a 3-4 front. Defensive Coordinator L.C. Cole knows that defense wins championships. He has a core group of defenders who will create havoc for offenses. The hard hitting starts with the linebackers. DeJuan Fulghum made a name for himself as a freshman last year. He is a tough, smart player who loves to hit. Fulghum's defensive skills made him the top returning tackler for the Tigers. Nose guard David Knighten and defensive end Matthew Valmore will anchor down the defensive line. Knighten's strength and quickness will demand a double team while Valmore will be a brick wall for anyone trying to run in his direction. The Tigers secondary will be talented, yet not battle tested. Curtis Thompson, a transfer from the University of Minnesota will lead the squad. The Houston native is a big hitter who started seven games last season in Minnesota. He has the tools to break up the big play and the experience to get the younger guys where they need to be. With depth and overall talent an issue during the spring, Cole anticipates that the newcomers will fill the holes to put the team over the top. The major pieces are in place for what promises to be an exciting year. The Tigers begin the 2008 campaign in an ESPNU televised match-up against arch rival Prairie View A&M in the annual State Farm Labor Day Classic. TSU will get to fine tune their skills over the next five weeks as they face Arkansas State (Sept. 6), Shaw (Sept. 13), Texas College (Sept. 20), Concordia (Sept. 27) and Texas State (Oct. 4) in non-conference action. The Tigers return to conference play when they travel to Southern on Oct. 11. They'll return home the following weekend to host defending SWAC champion Jackson State, and then hit the road to play Alcorn State. The Tigers hosts Mississippi Valley State for homecoming on Nov. 8 and will host Grambling State in a nationally televised game on Nov. 20 on ESPNU. The regular season will conclude against Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. "We have brought players together from all different directions to form this team. We will run fast, hit hard and tackle," said Cole. "We want to put the ball in the air and score a lot of points. So if you are looking for some exciting football, we will be the best show in town."

The 2007-2008 offense ranked second in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the th defense ranked 12 among all Division II programs in the country. Three players from that team, Virgil Union, Ed Williams and Floyd Stanford played in the 2007-2008 East Coast All-Star Game which is ranked 25th in the American Football Coaches Poll, ranked in the top ten Mid-HBCU Football 2006 Poll and ranked tenth overall in the Sheridan Black College Poll.
