2010 Outlook

The Texas Southern Tigers are on their way...up. In two short seasons, head coach Johnnie Cole has taken the Tigers from the cellar of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to the first level...and they are standing at the elevator destined for the top floor. "I`m really excited about the 2010 season. Our guys have bought into the system and with two years in it, we're able to focus on the details," said Cole. Those details begin with a defense that finished first in the SWAC and 21st (FCS) in the nation. Senior linebacker Dejuan Fulghum will lead a Tiger defense that lost only four starters. The 2009 All-SWAC linebacker led the conference in Tackles for Loss (1.55 per game) and ranked tied for 8th nationally. He was fourth in the SWAC with 88 tackles and he recorded eight sacks. "Fulghum is the captain of our defense and he leads by example," said coach Cole. "He is the most under-rated linebacker in the nation in my opinion. When you watch him on film, he jumps out at you, but he will get his just due." Texas Southern's entire secondary returns which include junior strong safety Curtis Thomas, senior free safety Darrell Glasper, junior defensive back Kydarian Wilkins and All-SWAC defensive back De'Marcus Washington. The Tiger's secondary accounted for 19 interceptions, 19 breakups, six touchdowns and 293 yards. Six of the picks and two touchdowns belong to Thomas while Wilkins recorded a team high six breakups. The defensive line bulked-up in the off season. Roland Melancon will anchor the defensive line along with three additions...junior LaGrone Shields and sophomores Tim Benford and DeAndre Savage. "These young men are athletic and ready to go. Our defensive line won't miss a beat when they get in the trenches for battle. I'm looking for our defense to have a stellar year," said Cole. Experience is on coach Cole's side with the return of senior quarterback Arvell Nelson. Nelson had a breakout season in 2009 where he passed for 2392 yards, threw 12 touchdowns, and rushed for 325 yards and four touchdowns. "It took Arvell a minute to grasp our system, but once he got it...he led the team to win five of the last six games of the season and put TSU at the top of the SWAC in passing offense." Nelson was the SWAC 2009 Newcomer of the Year. The Tigers also return All-American punt returner and wide receiver William Osborne who missed last season because of an injured. His explosiveness will add firepower to the offense. Joseph Warren is also a double-threat at the wide receiver and tailback positions. Junior Marcus Wright and senior Martin Gilbert are both capable backs who will battle for the starting role. All-SWAC senior offensive lineman Charles Smith will anchor upfront. He started the last two years, playing every position without missing a snap. Senior Skylar Trimple will be at his side for a second season. Trimple also played every game in 2009.

Darryl Stevenson was a surprising find during spring practices. "Darryl caught our attention in the spring with his athleticism and toughness. He'll be able to step in a make an immediate impact on our offensive line." Special teams should be very special for the Tigers. Junior kicker Robert Herst returns for a third year. TSU also has some exciting players to return the ball in Osborne and Warren. "Those guys returning is big for us because they are so explosive. They'll put our offense in good field position and we'll back people up with our kicking game," said Cole. Overall, the Tiger's biggest challenges were the running game and turnovers, both of those issues have been addressed. "I look for us to have a great season with our solid defense and upgrades on offense. We got to protect the ball which I know we will. If you look at it, we had the number one offense in the conference even though we lead the nation in turnovers. Once we correct that issue, the sky is the limit," said Cole. The Tigers will play all nine SWAC schools this season. TSU will start with 2009 SWAC champions Prairie View A&M in the Labor Day Classic. The game will be played on Sunday, September 5th at Reliant Stadium. TSU's home games include Alabama A&M, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley, Grambling and Arkansas Pine Bluff. Mississippi Valley will be the homecoming game. The Tigers will play their home games at Delmar Stadium. TSU had two openings for non-conference opponents. They will face the University of Connecticut on September 11th and Tuskegee University on September 25th. The Tigers had several reasons to celebrate the 2009 season. Their 5-2 conference record and 6-5 overall record were the best since 2000 and their tie for second in the SWAC Western Division was the best since 1998. TSU also ended the 2009 season ranked 7th in the TSPNSports.com and Cavil's Classic Cuts Final HBCU Major Division Football Polls. They also ranked 11th in the SBN Sports Network Black College Football poll. These accomplishments are admirable, but the Tiger's ultimate goal is SWAC Championship. If they continue on the rise they are on, that could be their next stop.

The state-of-the-art facility has the league's first retractable roof, taking only ten minutes to open fully. Of the 69,500 seats, 44,000 are of the sideline variety, lower level luxury suites are closer to the action than in any other NFL stadium and nearly 90 feet closer to the natural grass playing surface than at the Astrodome. The 166 suites accommodates from Astrodome 16 to 22 people. In 1996 the Texans played their first season, and in February 2004 hosted Super Bowl XXXVIII. In the future you can expect many more major events to be held in this amazing stadium, including the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Reliant Stadium is also the home of RodeoHouston and its annual 2 million patrons.
