THE DISTRICT CONTROLLER'S VIEW No. 16 NORTH CORNWALL.

The District Controller's View

ompleting the Xpress Trilogy on BR/Southern operating in the West of England, The District Controller's View No.16 provides students of railway operating with the most detailed book yet produced of a Summer Saturday in North Cornwall during the days of steam operation. (The book actually goes beyond the limits of North Cornwall since it also includes most of the Exeter to Plymouth main line). Part of the fascination of the North Cornwall lay in its remoteness from London, so much so that the last through train of the day to stations north of Launceston left Waterloo at the very early hour of one in the afternoon. A return journey the same day was quite out of the question. 1950's BR STEAM OPERATING Motive power employed on the line was more varied than that of many No.16 other sections of the Southern and although West Country Pacifics were to be NORTH CORNWALL found, so too in similar numbers were N 2-6-0 moguls and T9 4-4-0's: the last OKEHAMPTON - WADEBRIDGE - PADSTOW mentioned still being used on through trains to and from London. In spite of being a Southern stronghold, foreign engines were to be found at the extremity of the route with St Blazey GWR 45xx 2-6-2T's working many RAILWAY HISTORY by RAILWAY PROFESSIONALS of the Padstow - Bodmin Road services whilst many of the the competing Southern services to and from Bodmin North were XPRESS PUBLISHING : BOOK TITLES worked by a Wadebridge-based 57xx pannier tank.
